July 7, 1922-April 1, 2009 Merlin M. Herzog Sr., 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Valley Memorial Homes in Woodside Village, Grand Forks, N.D. Merlin was born to William and Bertha (Johnson) Herzog on July 7, 1922 in Melbourne, Iowa. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School on May 29, 1941. In August 1942 he joined the United States Navy and served in both the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters. He was part of the 293rd Joint Assault Signal Corps, 2nd Beach Battalion, attaining the rank of signalman first class. He was discharged on Dec. 24, 1945.
Former St. Paul resident Randall L. Mastenbrook, 61, of Deland, Fla., died March 24, 2009 at his residence. Surviving him are his wife Jill, of Deland, Fla.; two daughters, Karin (Jon Peterson) Mastenbrook of Detroit Lakes and Karlene Mastenbrook of Watertown, S.D.; one stepdaughter, Michele Young of Florida; two stepsons, Jason Young and Murphy Young, also of Florida; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Trent (Lynn) Mastenbrook, of Lino Lakes, Minn.; two sisters, Candice (Scott) Whelan of Minneapolis and Debbie (Bob) Wetterlin of Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sept. 3, 1921-March 26, 2009 Former Moorhead resident Odelia A. Kalvik, 87, of Lake Park, died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park. Odelia "Ode" Amanda Kaastad was born to Ole and Dora (Kaaland) Kaastad on Sept. 3, 1921 in Hannaford, N.D. She was baptized at Union Lutheran Church in Hannaford and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City, N.D. Ode attended elementary school at Hannaford and graduated from Valley City High School in 1939. She worked for a time at Valley City State Teacher's College.
Sept. 11, 1947-March 28, 2009 Patricia L. Nagel, 77, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Patricia Lucine Turner was born to Thomas W. and Ella (Tonsager) Turner on Sept. 22, 1931 in Detroit Lakes. She attended Lincoln Elementary School in Detroit Lakes, then moved with her family to Brookings, S.D. Patricia married George "Mack" Renney in Brookings in 1948. They moved to Detroit Lakes, where they later divorced. Pat worked as a housekeeper in the Detroit Lakes area, retiring in 2003. She married Elmer Nagel on Feb.
Sept. 11, 1947-March 27, 2009 Virgil L. "Cob" Fairbanks, 61, of Mahnomen, died on Friday, March 27, 2009 at his home in Mahnomen. Virgil Lee Fairbanks was born the son of Thomas and Marie (Brunette) Fairbanks on Sept. 11, 1947 at White Earth. He attended elementary school in Pine Point, high school in Park Rapids, and welding school in Grand Rapids, Minn. He then moved to Minneapolis, where he utilized his welding skills at the American Iron Supply Company for 37 years. He received numerous awards for the artistic sculptures he had welded.
April 7, 1959-March 25, 2009 Michael J. "Mike" Hagel, 49, of New York Mills, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Lakeland Hospice. Michael John Hagel was born to Leroy Millard Hagel and Luella (Schwartz) Eskola on April 7, 1959 at St. James Hospital in Perham. Mike grew up on the family farm in Heinola. In 1970 the Hagel family moved to New York Mills, where Mike attended New York Mills High School.
Nov. 3, 1917-March 24, 2009 Former Rochert resident Evelyn L. Johnson, 91, of Fargo, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo. Evelyn Lenora Olson was born to Erik and Anna (Hanson) Olson on Nov. 3, 1917 in Moorhead. She attended Moorhead Public Schools for seven years, and was a confirmed member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. Evelyn worked for Barney's Green Gable and Peterson Farms, both of Moorhead, for several years. On Sept. 14, 1940, Evelyn married Harold Johnson at Rochert.
March 27, 1921-March 25, 2009 Robert A. "Bob" Ullrich, 87, of Lake Park, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Bob was born to Marcus and Emma (Kelting) Ullrich on March 27, 1921 in Downer, Minn. Bob attended country school until moving to Lake Park in 1936. From 1942 to 1945 during World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, where he served in the 36th Engineers Texas Division during five invasions in the European Theatre, where he received a Bronze Star. He was a charter member of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
May 23, 1915-March 21, 2009 Irene Zieske, 93, of Manteno, Ill., died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno. Irene Gertrude Rita Zieske was born the daughter of Charles William and Helen (Spaeth) Zieske on May 23, 1915 in Greenwald, Minn. Irene was one of only 500 female World War II combat nurses.
March 19, 1924-March 14, 2009 Lorraine Peterson, 84, of Pelican Rapids, died on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at MeritCare Palliative Care Unit in Fargo. Eunice Lorraine Hoadley was born the daughter of Floyd and Myrtle (Randall) Hoadley on March 19, 1924, in Pelican Rapids. She was baptized at Scambler Church in rural Pelican Rapids and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. Lorraine attended Bangor School through the 8th grade and Pelican Rapids High School through 11th grade. In her youth, Lorraine was active in 4-H.
