April 19, 1912-Feb. 7, 2009 Blanche Christensen, 96, of Mahnomen, died peacefully on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in Mahnomen. Blanche was born to James Ernest and Betty Emma (Swanson) Barta on April 19, 1912 in rural Lake Grove Township, southeast of Waubun. After attending District 10 country school, she graduated in 1930 from Waubun High School, where she was on the championship girls' basketball team. On Sept. 15, 1931 she married Raymond E. "Ray" Christensen at Ogema.
March 24, 1958-Feb. 7, 2009 Daniel L. Thielen, 50, of Rochert, died Saturday, February 7, 2009 in his home, under the care of his loving family. Daniel Lee Thielen, known as "Dip," was born to Leonard and Estella (Metzger) Thielen on March 24, 1958 in Detroit Lakes. He was baptized and confirmed at Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway. Dan attended Callaway Elementary School and was a 1976 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. He married Laura Stone on Sept. 17, 1977 in Underwood, Minn.
Edwin T. Johnson, 90, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at St. Mary's Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services at the funeral home. Aug. 21, 1912-Feb. 5, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Barbara Sharp, 96, of Alexandria, died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Knute Nelson in Alexandria. Barbara Graves was born to Boyd and Grace (Kennedy) Graves on Aug. 21, 1912 in Elgin, Ill., where she attended school, and graduated from Elgin High School in 1930. Barbara played first harpist in the Elgin High School Orchestra. After high school she attended the Ellis Business College in Elgin. On June 1, 1933, Barbara married Zenas Sharp at the First Baptist Church in Elgin. The couple moved to Zenas' hometown of St.
May 4, 1923-Feb. 7, 2009 Mildred L. Buck, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died February 7, 2009 at St. Mary's Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Mildred L. Bogenschutz was born to Christian and Norma (Schmit) Bogenschutz on May 4, 1923 in Perham, where she grew up and received her education. After graduation she worked as a telephone operator in the Perham area, where she met Chester W. Buck and married him on Dec. 25, 1946.
Feb. 25, 1923-Feb. 8, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes area resident Estelle Graham, 85, of Grand Forks, N.D., died Sunday, February 8, 2009 in Valley Memorial Homes Eldercare Center. Estelle Thelma Fiskum, the daughter of Adolph and Ella (Bergquist) Fiskum, was born on Feb. 25, 1923 in Pelican Rapids. Estelle grew up in Moorhead, where she graduated from high school. She attended Concordia College at Moorhead, and later completed her nursing training at Fairview Hospital, Minneapolis, where she became a registered nurse. She married Dr. John Graham in 1949.
Sept. 26, 1965-Feb. 7, 2009 Patricia Lynn Basswood, 43, of Ogema, died Satur-day, February 7, 2009, at St. Mary's Innovis Health Cen-ter in Detroit Lakes. Patricia Lynn Basswood, known as "Patti Lynn," was born to Norman Blakely and Mary Lou Basswood on Sept. 26, 1965 in Park Rap-ids. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Anna and Albert Basswood. She attended Pine Point Elementary School, Park Rapids High School and Circle Of Life High School in White Earth. Patricia was in the process of obtaining her G.E.D. (graduation equivalency degree) at the time of her death.
Sept. 10, 1917-Feb. 8, 2009 Alvin N. Thornes, 91, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at St. Mary's Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Alvin was born the son of Leif and Ingeborg (Selland) Thornes on Sept. 10, 1917, in Marshall County, S.D. He attended grade school in Victor Township, S.D., and graduated from West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, Minn. As a young adult he attended the University of Minnesota, receiving a degree in animal husbandry in 1946, after taking time out to serve in the Army Air Force during World War II.
June 18, 1918-Feb. 6, 2009 William F. "Bill" Scheler, 90, of Callaway, died Friday, February 6, 2009 in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. William Francis Scheler was born to Anton and Mary (Falk) Scheler on June 18, 1918 at Jamestown, N.D. He was a 1937 graduate of Jamestown High School. During his school years, he also delivered newspapers for the Jamestown Sun, set pins at Majestic Bowling Alley and worked for a golf course. After graduation, he was a checker at Economy Grocery in Jamestown prior to moving to Minnesota.
Rueben Just, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 in the Wishek Home for the Aged in Wishek, N.D. Surviving Rueben are his brother, George Just; and three sisters, Maggie Herr, Irene Koepplin and Lorraine Bauer. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 in St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Wishek is providing arrangements.
