June 26, 1934-March 20, 2009 Donald E. Holm, 74, of rural Detroit Lakes, died Friday, March 20, 2009 in his home. Don was born the son of Ernest and Martha (Snow) Holm on June 26, 1934, in Minneapolis. He was raised and attended school in the Minneapolis area. Later the family moved to Annandale, Minn., where Don graduated from high school in 1952. On Dec. 31, 1954, Don married Artis Helgeson in St. Cloud, Minn. He drove truck and helped manage Helgeson Rest Home in Sauk Rapids with his wife, Artis.
Jan. 15, 1930-March 17, 2009 Dorothy L. Bajenske, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Dorothy was born to Anton and Frances (Patyk) Bajenske on Jan 15, 1930. For most of her life, Dorothy lived on the family dairy farm outside Menahga, where she helped to milk cows and perform household chores. Dorothy loved nature, taking long walks in the woods, spending time with her cats, and hobbies such as latch hooks and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed the family outings of fishing and blueberry picking.
June 8, 1938-March 19, 2009 Darwin D. Rader, 70, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Innovis Health in Fargo. Darwin Darrel Rader was born to George and LaVerna (Quast) Rader on June 8, 1938 in Galesburg, N.D. At a young age, Darwin moved with his family to rural Frazee. He was baptized Aug. 17, 1938 and confirmed May 25, 1952 at Christ E. Lutheran Church in Spruce Grove Township, rural Frazee. He attended country school near Frazee at District 52. He graduated from Frazee High School in 1956. On April 11 1957, Darwin enlisted in the United States Army in Fargo.
July 3, 1929-March 17, 2009 Former Fargo resident Eugene A. Davidson, 79, of Osage, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz. Eugene Andrew Davidson was born to David and Marie (Tresmer) Davidson on July 3, 1929 in Amery, Wis. He grew up in Amery and graduated from Amery High School. On Jan. 7, 1949 he married Margie Gorres, and together they had nine children. Gene married Ernestine "Ernie" Kramer on Aug. 31, 1984. They made their home in Fargo. He worked as a mechanic and night foreman at Cummins Diesel in Fargo for over 30 years before retiring in 1994.
Eleanor R. Lindell, 82, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Arrangements are pending with West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. Roberta Mae Cox, 72, of Osage, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in her home. Survivors include her husband, Richard Cox; five sons, Bruce (Connie) Cox, Brian Cox, Robert (Becky) Cox, David Cox and Daniel (Keli) Cox; and a daughter, Kathleen Cox. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21 at Grace Community Church, Osage, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Osage. Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids is providing arrangements.
Oct. 13, 1914-March 16, 2009 Former Rollag resident Edna M. Savig, 94, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Edna Mae Green was born to Clarence and Mabel (Charles) Green on Oct. 13, 1914 in Pawanee, Ill. When Edna was a small child, her family moved to Tovey, Ill., where her dad worked in a coal mine. It was in Tovey that Edna graduated from high school. Following graduation, Edna did housework for a family and worked in a restaurant. She later worked in a factory in Chicago, Ill., assembling speedometers.
May 15, 1914-March 17, 2009 Stanley E. Egenes, 94, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Stanley E. Egenes was born to Syvert and Hannah Egenes on May 15, 1914 in Thief River Falls, where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1933. Stanley was an accomplished track and field runner, who qualified to run in the State High School Track Meet. His father was accidentally killed when Stanley was seven years old, and he then worked in various jobs to help out his family, including on the Barzen Dairy Farm.
Feb. 7, 1916-March 13, 2009 Anna M. Melby, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died peacefully in her home on Friday, March 13, 2009, surrounded by her loved ones. Anna Mae Thorpe was born to Andrew and Patrina (Berg) Thorpe on Feb. 7, 1916 in Callaway. She was raised in the Callaway area and attended school at District 44 in Hamden Township. She married Reuben Melby on May 28, 1939. Reuben and Anna made their home in Richwood until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1948. Anna was a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed baking cookies, doughnuts, and lefse.
May 13, 1929-March 14, 2009 Former Ulen resident Vernon M. Rasmussen, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Vernon Monroe Rasmussen was born to Carl R. and Alice (Prestegord) Rasmussen on May 13, 1929 in Hunter, N.D. In 1936, he moved with his family to Ulen and attended District 68 country school. He later attended agriculture school in Crookston, Minn. Vern served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he returned to Ulen, where he farmed the family farm until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1999.
