Former Madelia, Minn., resident Doris M. Jensen, 85, of Detroit Lakes, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2008, at St Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Doris Marilyn was born to Frederick C. and Nellie Augusta (Nelson) Jensen on June 1, 1923 in Madelia, and graduated from Madelia High School in 1941. Doris left Madelia in the 1970s and made her home in Tucson, Ariz. During the past two years she had made her summer home in Detroit Lakes with Dr. Lowell and Shannon Wenberg. Doris took training in medical technology in Minneapolis. She was employed by Dr. Clair James in Madelia, at St.
April 5, 1914-July 24, 2008 Mary A. Vrzal, 94, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at St. Mary's Nursing Center, Detroit Lakes. Mary Agnes Vrzal was born to Frank and Katherine (Vesely) Vrzal on April 5, 1914 in Manning, N.D. Her family moved to Callaway when she was a young girl. They farmed near Callaway, and she attended Country School there. She cared for her parents for many years at home because of illnesses. In 1945, Mary moved to Detroit Lakes, where she worked for the Swift Turkey Plant for the next 32 years, retiring in 1977.
Nov. 9, 1958-July 25, 2008 Mark Andrew Yliniemi, 49, of Ponsford, passed away at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga on Friday, July 25, 2008. Mark was born to Rudolph and Joan (Gobernatz) Yliniemi on Nov. 9, 1958 in Detroit Lakes. He attended the Osage Elementary School through the 4th grade, and then went on to attend middle school and high school in Park Rapids. He graduated from Park Rapids High School with the Class of 1977. Mark was tragically injured in a snowmobile accident in November 1977, which left him paralyzed from the chest down.
May 14, 1918-July 27, 2008 Frank B. Greenough, 90, of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, after he succumbed to a brief illness. Frank Burt Greenough was born on May 14, 1918 in Barnesville, Minn., and graduated from Crookston (Minn.) High School. He was a 1940 graduate of Hamline University in St. Paul, and married classmate Betty Hill in 1941 in Madelia, Minn. During World War II, Frank served in the U.S. Army, stationed on the Galapagos Islands.
Feb. 15, 1937-July 21, 2008 Former Twin Valley resident Milan Syverson, 71, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, July 21, 2008, at MeritCare Health Systems in Fargo. Milan Harold Syverson was born the son of Oliver and Julia (Brenna) Syverson on Feb. 15, 1937, near Twin Valley. As a young child, Milan was baptized at Atlanta Lutheran Church, rural Ulen, and confirmed his faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. Growing up, he lived with his family near Twin Valley, and attended Lincoln and Heiberg Country Schools before going to Twin Valley High School.
Dec. 26, 1918-July 24, 2008 Dr. Lloyd C. Carlson, 89, of Detroit Lakes and Sun City West, Ariz., died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at St. Mary's Care Center in Detroit Lakes. Lloyd was born to Carl and Lena (Byberg) Carlson on Dec. 26, 1918 in Valley City, N.D., where he was raised and educated. Lloyd attended Jamestown College and was very active in athletics. He later was inducted into the Jamestown College Athletic Hall of Fame. After college he coached and taught in Drake, N.D. In 1941, he was inducted into the Army Air Force and served on a B-17 Bomber crew during the war.
Feb. 23, 1909-July 24, 2008 Aletha Evans Olson, 99, longtime resident of Detroit Lakes, died July 24, 2008, at Emmanuel Care Center. Aletha was born as the first child of Coral Aletha Oldham Evans and Harrison Clifton Evans on Feb. 23, 1909, in Monroe, Iowa. Aletha's father died in 1912, and later her mother married Floyd Fuller. The Fuller family moved to the nearby town of Newton, Iowa, where Aletha attended Newton High School, graduating in 1926 at age 17. Aletha exhibited extraordinary leadership skills and intelligence beginning early in her life.
July 7, 1950-July 23, 2008 Detroit Lakes native Gerald R. "Jerry" Sullivan, Jr., 58, of Faribault, Minn., died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at home following a lengthy illness. Gerald Robert Sullivan, Jr., was born to Jerry and Dolores (Baker) Sullivan on July 7, 1950 in Detroit Lakes, where he grew up appreciating the outdoors, lakes and his love of animals, especially horses. He also learned some of his father's trade as a plumber; later he would expand that skill into commercial construction, when he moved to the Minneapolis area.
Jan. 25, 1919-July 22, 2008 Herbert A. "Herb" Flatt, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. Herb was born the son of Joseph and Martha (Woitzel) Flatt on Jan. 25, 1919 in Grandin, N.D., where he was raised and educated. As a young adult, he served in the United States Army from 1942-45. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor and Saipan. Herb married Stella Paasch on June 2, 1946 in Fargo. They made their home in rural Grandin, where they farmed until 1955. They then moved to Detroit Lakes, where Herb farmed and worked in construction.
Oct. 18, 1922-July 11, 2008 Hitterdal native Earl S. Johnson, 85, of Santa Barbara, Calif., passed away on Friday, July 11, 2008 at his home. Earl was born to Arthur and Olga (Nelson) Johnson on Oct. 18, 1922 on the family farm northeast of Hitterdal. He was baptized at home, confirmed in the East Salem Church in Hitterdal in 1937, and graduated from Hitterdal School in 1940. When World War II broke out, Earl volunteered for the Navy Air Corps and served as a dirigible pilot, patrolling the Pacific Coast.
