Dec. 14, 1918-July 6, 2006 Detroit Lakes native John J. Keyes, 87, of Bemidji, died Thursday, July 6, 2006 at Neilson Place in Bemidji. John Jerome Keyes was born to James and Margaret (Millane) Keyes on Dec. 14, 1918 in Detroit Lakes, where he grew up and attended school. After high school, he worked for Becker County before serving in the Army during World War II. During the war he served in the South Pacific. Returning home, he attended business school in Minneapolis. John married Katherine Lucille Jacoby on Sept. 13, 1947 in Detroit Lakes.
Sept. 12, 1958-July 9, 2006 Detroit Lakes native Randy K. Osten, 47, of Mankato, Minn., died Sunday, July 9, 2006 at his residence. Randy Kenneth Osten was born to Elmer N. and Dorothy H. (Carlson) Osten on Sept. 12, 1958 in Detroit Lakes. He was baptized and confirmed at Bakke Lutheran Church and attended Richwood Elementary School, Richwood, and Detroit Lakes High School, graduating in 1977. He subsequently attended the Moorhead Vocational Technical College in Moorhead. He worked at the Super Valu and Hornbacher's Super Markets in Fargo.
Aug. 25, 1920-July 10, 2006 Becker County native Archie Charles Torgerson, 85, of Park Rapids, died on Monday, July 10, 2006 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Archie, the son of Charles and Pearl (Fraser) Torgerson, was born on Aug. 25, 1920 in Becker County. He grew up near Audubon and attended the local country school, District 21. In June 1942, Archie married Ruth Larson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Audubon. They farmed in Hamden Township until Archie was called into the U.S. Army on Oct. 28, 1942, during World War II.
Jan. 5, 1930 - July 1, 2006 Park Rapids native Lawrence Bethel, 76, of Lake George, Minn., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, July 1, 2006 after a valiant battle with cancer. Lawrence was born to Pearl and Laura (Armbruster) Bethel on Jan. 5, 1930 in Park Rapids. It was in this same area that he attended school, graduating from Park Rapids High School. In 1948, Lawrence enlisted in the U.S. Nav,y where he proudly served his country during the Korean and Vietnam wars, in a military career that spanned 20 years. He married Margaret Halter in Olympia, Wash.
Former Detroit Lakes resident Avis H. Anderson, 91, of New Hope, Minn., died January 30, 2006 in New Hope. Interment services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, July 15 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes. The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is serving the family.
The Moorhead native who has led Minnesota's largest state agency for more than 3 years is leaving that job for a Minneapolis law firm. Kevin Goodno, a Moorhead City Council member before representing his hometown a dozen years in the state House, leaves as state human services commissioner July 25, Gov.
Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist is rounding up a posse to help respond to public safety emergencies. Bergquist outlined plans to the Clay County Commission on Tuesday for recruiting 25 people who will assist with search-and-rescue missions, regulate large public gatherings and battle natural disasters. Adding a posse in Clay County follows a statewide trend of incorporating more volunteers into policing, Bergquist said. "A lot of sheriff's departments have them.

The Becker County Relay For Life was held on June 23 at the DLHS football field. Twenty-six teams participated with many crazy skits, costumes and campsites.
