Feb. 4, 1917-March 13, 2012 Former Detroit Lakes resident Geraldine "Gerry" Edwards Pearson, 95, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Gerry was born to Ella Mae Reeves Edwards and Clarence Vincent Edwards on February 4, 1917, in Groton, S.D. In 1934, she graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. On February 12, 1938, Gerry married John Olaf Pearson of Detroit Lakes. Preceding Gerry in death were her parents, Mae and Clarence Edwards; husband, John Pearson; brother, Keith Clarence Edwards; and granddaughter, Sally Jean Watson.
May 6, 1919-March 18, 2012 Bessie Greenough, better known as Betty, died Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the Cottages of the Emmanuel Community in Detroit Lakes. Betty was born May 6, 1919 and grew up in Madelia, Minn., the only surviving child of George and Kathryn Hill. Betty attended Hamline University, graduating in 1941 with a degree in business. While there she met Frank Greenough. They were married just before he was drafted for World War II.
Dec. 6, 1951-Feb. 17, 2012 Former Bullhead City, Ariz., resident Dayle Dene (Bromley) Freeman, 60, of Hackensack, Minn., passed away at her home unexpectedly on Friday, February 17, 2012. Dayle was born to Charles "Chuck" and Deana (Sparks) Bromley on December 6, 1951 in Waterloo, Iowa. She was baptized at Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church on June 29, 1955. She grew up in Hackensack, living above her parents' family business, Bromley's Ten Mile Lake Inn. She attended both Walker elementary and high schools, graduating in 1970.
Dec. 15, 1923-March 25, 2012 Ray Conger was born to Emil and Mabel Conger on December 15, 1923 in Laurel, Mont. He grew up in Laurel and Dillon, Mont. Ray was an athlete, businessman, Christian, and most importantly to his family, a wonderful father. Weeks prior to graduating from high school, Ray went to spring training with the Cincinnati Reds' Ogden, Utah, minor league team. He accepted an invitation to play for the Brigham City Peaches; starting what he expected to be a career in professional baseball. When the season ended, he discovered he was not going to be a major league player.
Feb. 9, 1941-March 25, 2012 Former area resident Duane L. Gullard, 71, of West Charleston, Vt., passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, after a long illness. Duane was born the son of Emery and Marion (Jacobson) Gullard on February 9, 1941 in Moorhead. He graduated from Lake Park High School in 1959. Soon after high school, he joined the United States Army and was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, where he mastered the art of flying various models of planes. Duane worked in farming and construction most of his life.
Sept. 22, 1960-March 23, 2012 Lyle Shawn Burt, 51, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, March 23, 2012 at Aurora St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis. Shawn was born the son of Robert and Vivian (Dodds) Burt on September 22, 1960 in Denver, Colo. He was raised in Texas and Detroit Lakes. Shawn served in the United States Marine Corps. He was known for his excellent carpentry skills and his sense of humor. Shawn enjoyed the outdoors, camping with his family, traveling in his RV, surf fishing, cooking and spending time with his grandson.
May 22, 1924-March 21, 2012 Former Detroit Lakes and Thief River Falls resident May Jahr, 87, of Erskine, Minn., passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, at the West-Kjos Funeral Chapel, 900 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes. Local arrangements are being provided by the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine. May Lois Lee was born to Emma (Arndt) Lee and Albert Lee on May 22, 1924 in Cuba Township, Becker County. She was united in marriage to Vernon A.
April 24, 1913-March 28, 2012 Evangeline Quam, 98, of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead. Evangeline was born the daughter of Marcus and Hannie (Hagen) Quam on April 24, 1913 in Rugby, N.D. The family lived in Bottineau and Grafton, N.D., before moving to Fergus Falls in 1918. In 1925, the family moved to Detroit Lakes, where her father opened the J.C. Penney store. She was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in 1927, and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1930.
Dec. 14, 1938-March 24, 2012 Mary E. Myren, 73, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Essentia Hospital in Fargo. Mary Ellen Myren was born on December 14, 1938 in St. Paul. She grew up and attended school in Winona, Minn. On October 28, 1961 she was united in marriage to LeRoy A. Myren in St. Paul. Because of LeRoy's service in the Air Force they lived in various places before moving to Detroit Lakes in 1975. They owned and operated the Highway 59 Motel in Detroit Lakes until 1985.
Sept. 14, 1926-March 25, 2012 Ethelbert "Tigg" E. Van Wert, 85, of rural Waubun, died Sunday, March 25, 2012 at her residence, surrounded by her family and under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Funeral services for Ethelbert will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, in St. Columba Episcopal Church, White Earth. Visitation will start at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 1 in the White Earth Community Center, White Earth, and continuing until the time of services on Monday. Interment will be in St.
