Feb. 23, 1921-Oct. 15, 2012 Former Bovey resident Margaret S. Pickett, 91, died Monday, October 15, 2012 in Evergreen Terrace, Grand Rapids. Born February 23, 1921 in Bowman County, N.D., she was the daughter of D.F. and Lillie B. (Faulkner) Adams. Margaret was a homemaker, and had been a resident of the Snowball Lake and Bovey areas since 1951.
May 4, 1930-Oct. 11, 2012 Barbara J. Vogt, 82, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, October 11, 2012 at her residence, surrounded by her family and under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Funeral services for Barbara will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19 in Grace Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at David Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes.
Feb. 11, 1922-Oct. 14, 2012 Vienna Anderson, 90, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, October 14, 2012 at The Cottages in Detroit Lakes. Vienna and her twin sister, Ailie were born the daughters of Jonas and Fiina (Pirkko) Wart on February 11, 1922 in Squaw Lake, Minn. She was raised in the Squaw Lake area. As a young woman in 1945, Vienna went to Seattle, Wash., to work for Boeing during World War II. She returned to Minnesota after the war and was united in marriage to Willard Anderson on March 29, 1947 in Littlefork, Minn.
May 12, 1922-Oct. 13, 2012 Elmer Blakeway, 90, of Hawley, died on Saturday, October 13, 2012, in his home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Elmer J. Blakeway was born to Joseph and Eleanor (Perkins) Blakeway on May 12, 1922, near Hawley, where he grew up and attended school. He married Alfreda Anderson on June 14, 1947 in Lysne Lutheran Church near Hawley, and they made their home north of Hawley, where they farmed. Elmer was a dairy farmer who loved his cows and had a special place in his heart for little kids and dogs. He loved to fish and hunt.
Robert L. Anderson, 76, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Essentia Health in Fargo. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Feb. 19, 1950-Oct. 13, 2012 Jerold L. Zick, 62, of rural Osage, died Saturday, October 13, 2012 at St. Mary's-Essentia Health in Detroit Lakes. Jerry was born the son of John and Helen (Luckason) Zick on February 19, 1950 in Detroit Lakes. He graduated from Frazee High School in 1968. Jerry enlisted in the United States Army on January 21, 1969 and received an honorable discharge on January 20, 1971. He was united in marriage to Susan Pihlaja on March 23, 1974 in Osage. They made their home in rural Osage. Jerry farmed for most of his life.
July 20, 1955-Oct. 11, 2012 William V. Litzau, 57, of rural Park Rapids, died Thursday, October 11, 2012 at St. Paul Regions Hospital, St. Paul. Bill was born the son of John and Esther (Zurn) Litzau on July 20, 1955 in Park Rapids. He was raised and educated in the Menahga area. Bill was united in marriage to Wanda Pickett on December 7, 1974 at Richwood Lutheran Church, rural Detroit Lakes. They made their home in Detroit Lakes before returning to the Park Rapids area in 1989. Bill had a diverse career in working with all the elements of wood.
May 21, 1942-Aug. 14, 2012 Former Detroit Lakes resident Lyle Gordon Kirkeby, 70, of Parsons, Kansas, died suddenly at the Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Mo., on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. Lyle was born to Hiram and Irene (Mohr) Kirkeby on May 21, 1942 in Detroit Lakes. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1960 and Moorhead State University in 1976. Lyle was active in the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and later, serving as scoutmaster. After university, he lived in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, working as a computer programmer.
Jan. 16, 1921-Oct. 11, 2012 Lyle Elden Olson, 91, of Detroit Lakes, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Essentia Health in Fargo. He went to be with "the guy upstairs." Lyle was born to Ingbert and Dusean (Raaum) Olson on January 16, 1921 in Fargo. Lyle attended Central High School, where he played on the hockey team, which during that time won the state hockey tournament. Lyle entered the service November 12, 1942, where he served under Patton's 3rd Army, HQ, 21st Armored Infantry Battalion, 11th Armored Division. He was a specialist in tank repair.
July 18, 1918-Oct. 12, 2012 Lena B. Pope, 94, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, October 12, 2012 at Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes. Lena was born the daughter of Andrew and Caroline (Palmer) Sprague on July 18, 1918 in Tulare, S.D. She was united in marriage to David Pope on November 12, 1936 in Appleton, Minn. They made their home in Lyon County of southwestern Minnesota, where they raised their family. In 1948, they moved to Frazee and then to Waubun in 1975. Following the death of David, Lena moved to Detroit Lakes.
