June 10, 1942-July 22, 2010 Rev. Stuart K. Fankhanel, 68, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday July 22, 2010 at his residence, after a 10-year battle with cancer. Stuart Fankhanel was born to Kurt and Charlotte (Hinze) Fankhanel on June 10, 1942 in Detroit Lakes. He grew up and attended elementary school in Vergas. As a young boy, he helped his parents at Fankhanel's Tavern and Corner Sweet Shop. It was there that he learned to listen to people and how to tell a good story. He was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vergas.
Feb. 19, 1934-July 24, 2010 Francis M. Schreder, 76, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 27 at Holy Rosary Church in Detroit Lakes; there will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue at the church on hour prior to services on Wednesday. A mass of Christian burial is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 28 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with Monsignor Timothy McGee officiating.
Nov. 1, 1953-July 23, 2010 Alan B. Korth, 56, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, July 23, 2010 under the care of the staff at Frazee Care Center and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Alan was born the son of Melvin and Shirley (Pulvermacher) Korth on November 1, 1953 in Minot, N.D. He was raised and educated in Clintonville, Wis. Shortly after high school he moved to Frazee with his family, and Alan enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Vietnam War.
March 7, 1919-July 22, 2010 Ruby Sandberg, 91, died Thursday, July 22, 2010 at Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, with visitation one hour before the funeral. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 27 in Upsala Cemetery, near Detroit Lakes. Ruby Kathleen Schram was born the daughter of Jeremiah and Anna Amanda (Rudolph) Schram on March 7, 1919 in Otter Tail County, in a log house near Vergas.
April 20, 1927-July 19, 2010 Elmer Arthur Pihlaja, 83, of Snellman, joined his sons in heaven on Monday, July 19, 2010. He was a resident of Heritage Cottages in Park Rapids at the time of his passing. Elmer Arthur Pihlaja, son of Arthur Peter and Impi Irene (Longfors) Pihlaja was born April 20, 1927 in Duluth. As a young child he lived in Duluth, Butte, Mont., and Snellman. In 1930 his parents purchased the home place, where he grew up and returned to retire in 1996. He attended and graduated from District 82 Country School in Shell Lake Township. In 1944, Elmer moved to Seattle, Wash.
Caroline A. Hendrickson, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, October 29, 2009 in her home. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. this Thursday, July 22, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Barnesville.
March 10, 1965-July 19, 2010 Marlene K. Gordon, 45, of Audubon, died Monday, July 19, 2010 at her home, following her courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Friday, July 23 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with Chaplain Vicki Marthaler officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Audubon. Marlene Kay Sakshaug was born to Patrick and Zeila (Raffaell) Sakshaug on March 10, 1965 in Sidney, Mont.
April 19, 1926-July 19, 2010 Arnold O. Engen, 84, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, July 19, 2010 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Arnold was born the son of Oscar and Annie (Hollevoet) Engen on April 19, 1926, in the Strand Township of Gary, Minn. He was raised and educated in rural Gary. Arnold served in the United States Army from November 1944 to November 1946. He was united in marriage to Marvel Nelson on July 31, 1955. They made their home in rural Detroit Lakes, where they farmed for 35 years. In 1990, they moved to Detroit Lakes. Arnold was a member of Bakke Lutheran Church.
Fern Paulsen, 95, died Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Centerville, S.D. Services will be held Thursday, July 22 in Viborg, S.D. Surviving Fern are her husband Royal of Centerville; three daughters, Marilyn (Dennis) Sletten of Irene, S.D., Janice (Cliff) Adkins of Detroit Lakes and Dianne (Duane) Christensen of Lennox, S.D.; five grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Swensen of Sioux Falls, S.D.
May 30, 1927-July 17, 2010 Former Lake Park resident Mae Johnson, 83, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Mae was born to Elmer and Alma (Jellum) Ellingson on May 30, 1927, in Hamden Township, Becker County. She attended rural schools and grew up in the Lake Park area. Mae worked at various jobs in Detroit Lakes before her marriage to Lyle Johnson on June 10, 1950 in Lake Park. Together they farmed north of Lake Park. Lyle died October 8, 1991.
