The Fargo Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint sometime between Thursday and Saturday. The checkpoint is aimed at deterring drunken driving, and police hope people will make safe travel plans if alcohol is consumed. Police have arrested 77 people for DUI at 16 sobriety checkpoints since October 2004.
Two proposed constitutional amendments are headed for votes in the full Minnesota Senate. A proposal to increase the state's 6 1/2 percent sales tax to 6 7/8 percent passed the Senate Rules Committee 17-7 Wednesday. It is due on the Senate floor Monday. Fargo officials declared a state of emergency Thursday morning after flood forecasters predicted the Red River will crest at 33.8 feet in Fargo on April 6.
