A community forum for grandparents and other relatives raising children, and professionals and others who work with kinship families is Tuesday, May 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Mahube Community Council, 1125 West River Road, Detroit Lakes. According to the 2000 census figures for Minnesota, there has been a 100 percent increase in children who live in grandparent-headed households in the past 10 years. Minnesota's kinship numbers place it the sixth fastest growing state for relative caregiving.
The hottest word on Wall Street today is the same word that has farmers optimistic -- ethanol. To the oil and gas industry, however, ethanol is a fighting word. U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson said ethanol holds legitimate promise for reducing, or even eliminating the need for foreign oil -- especially from the Middle East. "The public is behind us on this -- finally," said Peterson, who hosted a farm meeting Friday morning in Olivia.
Red Oak Farms of Detroit Lakes has been recognized by the American Hereford Association. Three cows owned by Jim and Eileen Griffnow have been named to the Dams of Distinction list, which contains 1,828 cows from across the nation. An article reviewing the list is publishing in the April 2006 issue of Hereford World Magazine. It is also on AHA's Web site, www.hereford.org .

Korf works internship Lucia Korf, a senor at Concordia College in Moorhead, is working an internship this spring as a part of the college's Cooperative Education program. Korf is the daughter of Daniel and Susan Korf of Frazee. Korf, a communications and English writing major, is working at SK Food International, Fargo, as a marketing intern. Rivers arrives for duty Army Cpl. Ryan F. Rivers has arrived for duty at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station, Brainerd. Rivers is a fire support specialist with two years of military service. He is the son of Duane Safar of Ogema.
