Jan. 26, 1944-May 9, 2012 Sharon L. Collinge, 68, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Oak Crossing after a long, spirited battle with cancer. Sharon was born the daughter of Norman and Francis (Rindy) Amundson on January 26, 1944 in Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1962 and then attended Ancker Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul, graduating in 1965. Sharon married Dave Shepard and together they had two sons, Greg and Brian. She worked as a nurse, starting in 1965 at St. Mary's Hospital, where she worked her entire career.
Oct. 9, 1922-May 6, 2012 Stanley "Stan" B. Kittelson, 89, of Elk River, Minn., died on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at the Guardian Angels Care Center in Elk River. Stanley was born the son of Arthur and Alice (Bergstrom) Kittelson on October 9, 1922 in Nevis. He was raised in Nevis, where he attended public schools and graduated in 1940. He entered in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943; he served in the Pacific Theatre, including Guadalcanal, Okinawa, and China. He was honorably discharged after the war in 1946. Stan was united in marriage to Mavea Julia Domrese on Feb. 8, 1947 in Minneapolis.
Former Frazee resident Charlotte "Char" (Julius) Niemann, 76, passed away Monday, May 7, 2012, at Lakewood Care Center in Staples, Minn. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 10 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, with visitation to be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Frazee. Lunch will be hosted at the church following the service for all to attend.
July 9, 1948-May 3, 2012 Arthur G. Butcher Jr., 63, of Ponsford, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Mahnomen Health Center in Mahnomen. A private family funeral service will be held, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, White Earth. Arthur George Butcher Jr. was born to Arthur and Susan (Ahbedaush) Butcher Sr., on July 9, 1948 in White Earth. He was raised and educated in Ponsford, graduating from Park Rapids High School in 1966. He attended Haskell Institute for a year and then the University of Minnesota for a year.
June 16, 1941-May 5, 2012 Doris E. Sagen, 70, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Doris Elaine Sagen was born to Edward and Evelyn (Fagerlie) Marks on June 16, 1941 in Los Angeles, Calif. The family moved to Glyndon, Minn., when Doris was very young. She received her education in Glyndon, graduating from Glyndon High School in 1960. Doris was united in marriage to Merle Sagen in December of 1965. They raised their family in Detroit Lakes.
Aug. 17, 1935-May 4, 2012 Adelyn "Addie" E. Harvala, 76, died Friday, May 4, 2012 at Essentia in Fargo. Addie was born to Hugo B. and Lila (Yoki) Harvala on August 17, 1935 in Osage. She was a graduate of Frazee High School, where she enjoyed science and chemistry. In 1954 she moved to the big city of Minneapolis, where she worked as a bank teller and a shoe model for Dayton's Department Store. She earned her certificate of accounting from the International Accounting Society and worked as a bookkeeper, first for Twin City Bedding Co., then Del Nelson's Furniture.
Dec. 27, 1956-May 5, 2012 Georgie Johnson, 55, of Detroit Lakes, died on Saturday, May 5, 2012 in her home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. A gathering in celebration of Georgie's life will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 27, in the social hall at St. Mary of the Lakes Church, 20996 County Highway 20, Detroit Lakes. I, Georgie Johnson have been given the rare opportunity to write my own obituary. I was born to George and Carol Johnson on December 27, 1956, in Fargo. I grew up in Moorhead and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1975.
May 11, 1929-April 11, 2012 It is with deep sadness we announce the death of our beloved mother, Dorothy E. Blom, 82, of Detroit Lakes, on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at her home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Memorial services are set for 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 11 at David-Donehower Funeral Home, with Chaplain Vicki Marthaler officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Dorothy Emma Blom was born to Albert and Natalie (Mantie) Recksiedler on May 11, 1929 in Sewell, Manitoba, Canada.
May 5, 1918-May 1, 2012 Vivei N. Strang, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday May 1, 2012 at the Lakewood Care Center in Baudette, Minn. Vivei Naomi Strang was born to Benhart and Sophia (Larson) Gunderson on May 5, 1918 in Flom. She attended grade school there. She was a member of the choir and Luther League at Aspelund Lutheran Church in Flom. She was also a member of the Flom 4-H Club. Vivei graduated from Twin Valley High School, Twin Valley. She then attended the New York Hair Dressing Academy in Fargo, where she obtained her Minnesota beautician's license.
Jaxton David Murtagh, infant son of Brittany Murtagh of Detroit Lakes, was born and died on Monday, April 30, 2012 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes. Private family services will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with Monsignor Timothy McGee officiating. Jaxton is survived by his mother, Brittany Murtagh of Detroit Lakes; grandparents, DeeAnn and Sean Murtagh of Detroit Lakes; great grandparents, Roger and Donna Houglum of Long Lost Lake, Minn., and Pat Murtagh of British Columbia, Canada.
