June 30, 1933-Jan. 24, 2009 Richard J. Mueller, 75, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Richard was born to Joseph and Charlotte (Welter) Mueller on June 30, 1933 at home in Homestead Township, rural New York Mills. Richard was baptized on Oct. 22, 1944 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Butler, Minn. The baptism was witnessed and sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Steinbach. Richard attended Kolp and Davies country school until the 5th grade. He graduated from New York Mills High School with the class of 1952.
Sept. 28, 1915-Jan. 20, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Frances L. Mikulecky, 93, of North Olmsted, Ohio, died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at her residence. Frances Lucille Shaffer was born to Joseph and Olena (Larson) Shaffer on Sept. 28, 1915 in Inverness, Mont. At the age of nine she moved with her family to rural Detroit Lakes. She attended District 70 Country School in rural Detroit Lakes, and then attended Detroit Lakes High School, where she graduated in 1932. She then attended the Detroit Lakes Teacher Training Department, graduating in 1933.
Aug. 14. 1962-Jan. 25, 2009 Former Fargo resident Kim D. Sundeen, 46, of Duluth, Minn., died Sunday, January 25, 2009 at her home, from complications due to diabetes. Kim Diane Sundeen was born to Cecil and Agnes (Swanke) Sundeen on Aug. 14, 1962 in Fargo. She was raised in Tower City, N.D., and graduated from Leola (S.D.) High School. Kim lived most of her adult life in Fargo, where she was employed with Northwestern Bell and Qwest for over 20 years.
Jan. 22, 1933-Jan. 25, 2009 Sallie J. Bush, 76, of Fargo and Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, January 25, 2009 at her Fargo home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Sallie Jean Bush was born to Jack R. and Alta (Erickson) Bush on Jan. 22, 1933 in Detroit Lakes. In 1937, her family moved to Minneapolis, where Sallie graduated from Washburn High School in 1950. From 1950-54, she attended the University Of Minnesota, where she was a member of the women's tennis team and was the women's Singles champion in 1952 and 1953.
July 15, 1929-Jan. 24, 2009 Gwen G. Engen, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Gwen Horgan was born to Otto and Emma (Qualley) Horgen on July 15, 1929 in Warren, Minn., where she grew up and received her education, graduating from Warren High School. On June 20, 1948 she married Richard A. Engen in Warren, where they made their home until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1957. Gwen enjoyed her role as a mother and homemaker. In 1973, Gwen was very instrumental in the forming of the Senior Citizens Nutrition Center in Detroit Lakes.
Sept. 30, 1918-Jan. 22, 2009 Former Vergas resident Lulu M. Moltzan, 90, of Pelican Rapids, died on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Pelican Valley Health Center in Pelican Rapids. Lulu Marie Lewis was born to Herbert and Bertha (Brown) Lewis on Sept. 30, 1918 in Hunnewell, Kansas. As a child, she moved to Vergas. On May 26, 1947, Lulu married William Moltzan at St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Loon Lake, near Vergas, MN. She worked at West Central Turkeys in Pelican Rapids for 16 years. Lulu was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church for several years and was active with their Ladies Aid.
Sept. 29, 1930-Jan. 20, 2009 James E. Jader, 78, of Frazee, died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center in Frazee. James Edwin Jader was born Sept. 29, 1930 in Minneapolis. He was raised in the Mound-Minnetonka area and graduated from Breck Academy. He attended the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He served in the Korean Conflict as a medic. If you were to ask "Jimmy" what his best traits were, he would have replied, "I'm a Jack of all trades!" James is survived by his five children, Jon A.
Sept. 30, 1918-Jan. 23, 2009 Former Lake Park area resident Gordy Gunderson, 82, of Casselton, N.D., passed away on Friday, January 23, 2009 at Bethany Homes in Fargo. Gordy was born the son of Oscar and Emma (Larson) Gunderson on Jan. 31, 1926 in Cooperstown, N.D. He grew up by Aneta, N.D., and attended school in Romness Township. Gordy married Constance "Connie" Hanson on Jan. 9, 1949 at Sundahl Lutheran Church in Aneta. They farmed in Romness Township (Griggs County), near Cooperstown until 1966, when they moved to Lake Park, MN to operate a farm.
Sept. 12, 1935-Jan. 22, 2009 Kenneth L. "Punkin" Sullivan, Sr., 73, of White Earth, died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo. Kenneth L. Sullivan was born to Joseph and Lucille (Beaulieu) Sullivan on Sept. 12, 1935 in White Earth, where he was raised and educated, attending the White Earth Mission School. During his working life, he worked as a logger in the White Earth and Effie areas, for American Motors in Kenosha, Wis., as a custodian for the Waubun-Ogema-White Earth Public School and for F-M Asphalt in Fargo, from 1976 until 1994.
Luella G. Schurmann, 79, of Frazee, died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes. Luella was born to George and Lillie (Arneson) Skogen in Pelican Rapids. She graduated from high school in Detroit Lakes in 1948, then attended business school in Detroit Lakes. Lu moved to Minneapolis and became a bookkeeper at Fabri-Tek, Inc., where she retired from in 1994 after 38 years of service. Lu married Harold Schurmann in 1978. They made their home in Maple Grove, Minn.
