The Detroit Lakes Wrestling Boosters hosted the Seventh Annual Northwest Old-timers Tournament at Detroit Lakes High School March 11. There were 68 wrestlers and four teams competing for titles in 12 weight classes, ranging from 145 pounds to heavyweight. The lightest wrestler weighed in at 138 pounds and the heaviest was 309 pounds. The individual champions earned fleece pullovers for their efforts, while the top team won a trophy. Tournament organizers Nate Weber and Tom Trowbridge were satisfied with the turnout.
A 50-million gallon ethanol plant in Otter Tail County could be an economic lifter for this region. The quantity for the Detroit Lakes baseball team passes the litmus test, but the quality will be a work in progress throughout the season, as the Lakers return a host of pitchers, but will have plenty of new faces scattered on the diamond. The Lakers will be green in the crucial part of the field -- up the middle. There will be inexperience from the catchers to the shortstop, and second base to centerfield. But DL will be deep on the mound, with up to 10 pitchers who have some type of experience hurling the ball.
