After donning Detroit Lakes Laker red for three years during his high school years, the color will now come in the shade of a St. Cloud State University uniform for Raboin. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defenseman from DL, verbally committed to the Huskies this past week to finish a dream-like journey, which started in Kent Freeman Arena and went through Lincoln, Neb. and will end up on the ice of SCSU's National Hockey Center.
A majority of the 4,000 National Guard troops in the Minnesota-based 1/34 Brigade Combat Team is now in the Kuwaiti desert, preparing weapons and training for a few more weeks before it moves to Iraq, the unit commander said Thursday. The first troops arrived in Kuwait last week, and the rest continue to flow from Camp Shelby, Miss., to the unit's desert outpost, Col. David Elicerio said in a conference call with the media. Bedouin herders roam the countryside where the 1/34 is now. The troops have been training from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Fargo Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint sometime between Thursday and Saturday. The checkpoint is aimed at deterring drunken driving, and police hope people will make safe travel plans if alcohol is consumed. Police have arrested 77 people for DUI at 16 sobriety checkpoints since October 2004.
Two proposed constitutional amendments are headed for votes in the full Minnesota Senate. A proposal to increase the state's 6 1/2 percent sales tax to 6 7/8 percent passed the Senate Rules Committee 17-7 Wednesday. It is due on the Senate floor Monday. The second proposal, to guarantee Minnesotans affordable health care, passed 14-8.
Fargo officials declared a state of emergency Thursday morning after flood forecasters predicted the Red River will crest at 33.8 feet in Fargo on April 6. Officials said the step was taken so that the city will be eligible for disaster aid if flood damage occurs, but Mayor Bruce Furness stressed the city will be protected.
