May 20, 1959-May 21, 2010 Karen Kay Herdina, 51, of Detroit Lakes, died on Friday, May 21, 2010 at her residence in Detroit Lakes. Karen was born the daughter of Jerome and Marcella (Hassing) Herdina on May 20, 1959 in Albert Lea, Minn. She graduated from Akeley High School. She moved to New Hampshire, where she lived from 1981 to 1983. She then moved to the Park Rapids area, where her son Justin was born. She attended Bemidji Vocational School to be a medical secretary, and she was most recently working as a health care aide.
May 15, 1925-May 21, 2010 James Gjerde, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, May 21, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 26 at Northern Lights Tabernacle in Richwood, with Pastors Harold Soyring and Robert St. Claire officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Callaway. James was born to Simon and Borgny (Garnes) Gjerde on May 15, 1925 in Wolverton, Minn. He was a World War II veteran who proudly served his country from 1943-46 in the U.S. Army, Heavy Artillery. Basic Training was in Oklahoma.
Jan. 24, 1948-May 21, 2010 James V. Grove 62, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday May 21, 2010 at his residence. James Verne Grove was born to Verne and Virginia (Wilkening) Grove on January 24, 1948 in Farmington, Minn. He grew up and attended school in that area. He later attended Moorhead State University, where he earned his degree. He then earned his masters degree from the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.
Oct. 24, 1927-May 20, 2010 John "Blackie" Varriano, 82, of Moorhead, died Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Innovis Health in Fargo. John L. Varriano was born to Joseph and Carmella (Altobell) Varriano on October 24, 1927 in Dilworth, Minn. He grew up in Dilworth's Little Italy and attended Dilworth High School. After working with his father on the railroad from the time he was very young, he joined the United States Navy in October 1944. He served honorably until he was discharged in 1946.
Former Detroit Lakes area resident Joann D. (Clapshaw) Jones, 73, of Fergus Falls died Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Lakeland Hospice House in Fergus Falls, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 19 at Faith & Hope Funeral Home Chapel in Fergus Falls, with Chaplain Wes Hart officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery, Dent.
Del Rae Gunderson, 36, of Gary, Minn., died Friday, May 21, 2010 in her home, under the care of Hospice. Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 at Gary Lutheran Church in Gary, continuing from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 26 at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Anderson Funeral Home, Twin Valley.
Nov. 22, 1922-April 29, 2010 Former Ogema resident Rose Stalberger, 87, of Othello, Wash, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010 in Othello. Rose was born to Bernard and Theresia Meyer on November 22, 1922 in Spring Creek Township. She was raised in the Ogema area and then married the neighbor boy, Melvin Stalberger, on October 17, 1944. They raised six children on their small grain and dairy farm. Rose and Melvin moved to Othello in 1978 to start their semi-retirement years.
Jan. 31, 1945-May 18, 2010 Barbara Ann Fiske, 65, most recently of Pelican Rapids passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes after a long fought battle with cancer and cardio pulmonary diseases. Barbara was born to Flora and Master Sergeant Thomas Edward Childers on January 31, 1945 at Barksdale Air Force Base, Shreveport, La. She was raised mostly in Florida, between her beloved Everglades and Tallahassee. Barbara's father died early in her infancy and her mother passed away when she was only 14.
Former Detroit Lakes resident M. Kent Holmberg, 93, of Hillsboro, N.D., died Monday, May 17, 2010 at Hillsboro Long Term Care. A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Friday, May 21 at Korsmo Funeral Chapel in Moorhead.
May 24, 1912-May 17, 2010 Marie Bergren, 97, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, May 17, 2010 at her residence. Marie was born to Theodore and Selma (Syverson) Tovson on May 24, 1912 in Richwood Township, Becker County. She grew up and attended country school there. Marie was united in marriage to Leonard B. Bergren on May 24, 1930. They lived in Audubon, where Leonard was employed at the Audubon Co-op Creamery from 1929 to 1967. In the years that followed, Marie and Leonard owned and operated Dairy Queen stores in Iowa and Wisconsin.
