The Minnesota Twins earned the season's first win the night before they officially took the field on opening day. The Senate State and Local Government Operations Committee overwhelmingly approved on a voice vote Monday night a new Twins ballpark in downtown Minneapolis, without using direct state funding. The hearing was this year's first attempt to build a professional baseball stadium.

Nov. 17, 1922-March 7, 2006 Former Detroit, Mich., resident Celia M. Weissenstein, 83, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at St. Mary's Nursing Center, Detroit Lakes. Celia was born to Joseph and Helen Kubinski on Nov. 17, 1922 in Detroit, Mich., where she grew up and received her education, graduating from high school there. She then worked for American Bakeries in Detroit. On Aug. 7, 1948 she married Robert D. Weissenstein in Detroit, where they made their home and raised their family. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 2002. Celia was a very kind, giving lady.

June 5, 1985-March 29, 2006 AunaLaye R. Beckley, 20, of West Fargo, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006 in West Fargo. AunaLaye RoxAnn Beckley was born on June 5, 1985 in Moorhead. She grew up in West Fargo and graduated from West Fargo High School in 2004. AunaLaye attended school for one year at the State School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. At the time of her death, she was employed by Baker Nursery Gardens and attending Sister Rosalind Gefre School of Massage, both of Fargo. AunaLaye was a wonderful artist who enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting.
June 30, 1916-April 2, 2006 Norman E. Olson, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, April 2, 2006 at North Ridge Care Center in New Hope, Minn. Norman Edward Olson was born to Edward and Bessie Linquist Olson on June 30, 1916 in Tintah, Minn. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Morris, Minn., and he graduated from high school there. In 1936, he went to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps near the north shore of Lake Superior. In January 1942, Norman entered into the U.S. Army, and he fought in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
July 25, 1932-April 3, 2006 Margaret Boswell, 73, of Pelican Rapids, died Monday, April 3, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital, Detroit Lakes. Margaret Lucille Cleaveland, daughter of Earl and Agnes (Abrahamson) Cleaveland, was born July 25, 1932, at Granite Falls, Minn. She attended school at Casper and Skime, Minn., country schools. Margaret worked as a waitress in Roseau and Rochester, Minn., before moving to Biloxi, Miss., where she met and married Andrew Froysland, in 1954. They had one son, Frank.
Sept. 8, 1953-April 1, 2006 Eugene L. "Bim" Hegg, 52, of Fertile, Minn., died on Saturday, April 1, 2006, at the SCCI Hospital in Fargo. Eugene was born to Harvey and Lorraine (Bennen) Hegg on Sept. 8, 1953, at Crookston, Minn. They later moved to Fertile, where Eugene grew up and graduated from Fertile-Beltrami High School in 1972. After receiving his education, Bim began working with Joe Gaeta, who taught him carpentry. Along with his special friend, Lavonne Sannes, Eugene worked in Watford City, N.D., for about a year. He returned to Fertile and continued working as a carpenter.
March 1, 1911-April 2, 2006 Erick W. Wenzel, 95, of Vergas, died on Sunday, April 2, 2006 in the Frazee Care Center, Frazee. Erick was born the son of William and Augusta (Gewe) Wenzel on March 1, 1911 in Germany. At the age of 14, he came to live in the U.S., with 11 cents in his pocket. He worked as a barber, and then was employed as a supervisor for many years at American Crystal Sugar in Chaska, Moorhead and Crookston, Minn. Erick married Hildegarde "Hillie" Ell on Aug. 28, 1938 in Ortonville, Minn. He later retired, and they made their home on Long Lake near Vergas.
Nov. 8, 1924-March 30, 2006 Elsie M. Beckerleg, 81, of Akeley, Minn., died on Thursday, March 30, 2006 at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids. Elsie Marie Karl, the daughter of Louis, Sr. and Margaret (Pickar) Karl, was born on Nov. 8, 1924 at Marion, N.D. She moved with her family to Litchville, N.D., where she attended school. She helped on the family farm for a number of years. During World War II she moved to Bellingham, Wash., where she worked in the shipyards. Elsie married Homer F. Beckerleg on Sept. 9, 1946 at Marion, N.D.
