Nov. 28, 1954-Aug. 15, 2011 Gerald R. "Jerry" Layman, 56, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, August 15, 2011 at Lakeland Hospice House in Fergus Falls. Jerry was born the son of William and Jean (Glass) Layman on November 28, 1954 in Wadena. He was raised and educated in Deer Creek, graduating from high school in 1972. Jerry began working for BNSF Railroad shortly after high school. He was united in marriage to Jean Gennaro on Aug. 3, 1985 in Coon Rapids, Minn. They made their home in New York Mills, while Jerry continued to work for the railroad as a foreman/welder until 1987.
Alice Marie Ott, 92, of Perham, died Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Sanford Health in Fargo. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15 in the Detroit Lakes Seventh Day Adventist Church, with Pastor Conrad Vine officiating. Visitation took place for one hour prior to services. Burial was in the church cemetery. Schoeneberger Funeral Home of Perham was entrusted with the arrangements.
Jan. 10, 1925-Aug. 13, 2011 Phyllis Naomi Christianson, 86, of Cass Lake, passed away at her home in Cass Lake with her family by her side, on Saturday, August 13, 2011. Phyllis was born to Mark and Violet (Goodwin) Ross on January 10, 1925 in White Earth. She liked her pet dogs, gardening, fishing and playing games at the community shelter in Shelly, where she had many friends. She always spoke very highly of her friends there. Phyllis enjoyed making clothes for her husband and taking lunches to him out on his job site as a heavy road construction grader operator.
Former Pelican Rapids resident John Van Cleef, 95, of Lake Park, died Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park. Visitation and prayer services took place Sunday, Aug. 7 at Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 8 at St. Leonard's Catholic Church, Pelican Rapids, with burial in the church cemetery.
Rodney Albert Flatau, 86, of Frazee, died Monday, August 8, 2011 at his home. Visitation and prayer services were held Thursday, Aug. 11 at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, with funeral services taking place on Friday, Aug. 12 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee. Burial was in Flatau Cemetery, rural Perham. Arrangements were entrusted to Schoeneberger Funeral Home.
March 17, 1965-Aug. 9, 2011 Linda M. Warner, 46, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 in Champlin, Minn., surrounded by family, after a courageous three-month battle with cancer. Linda Marie Warner was born to Thomas and Alta (Cobb) Oakes on March 17, 1965 in Detroit Lakes. She grew up and received her education in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1983. Linda attended Moorhead State University, where she earned a B.S. degree in accounting in 1987. She then began working for Great Plains Software in Fargo.
Dec. 26, 1927-July 30, 2011 Stuart R. Hanson, 83, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Memorial services are set for 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12 in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Detroit Lakes, with visitation for one hour preceding the service. Interment will be in Lake Ripley Cemetery, rural Litchfield, Minn. Stuart Robert Hanson was born to Marco and Marion (Nelson) Hanson on December 26, 1927 in Litchfield. He was raised and educated in Litchfield. Stuart served with the U.S. Navy, 1946-47; 1949-53 and 1963-66.
Dec. 18, 1954-Aug. 6, 2011 Marilyn L. Morrison, 56, of rural Ogema, died Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Marilyn was born to Louis and Norleen (Martodam) Schik on December 18, 1954 in Perham. She was raised in Butler, Minn., and graduated from New York Mills High School. Marilyn was united in marriage to Douglas Morrison on February 23, 1974 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Butler.
March 8, 1927-Aug. 5, 2011 Henry George Auge, 84, of Wolf Lake passed away Friday, August 5, 2011 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes. Henry was born to Cyrille "Eugene" and Mary (Weidel) Auge on March 8, 1927in St. Paul. He attended the District 31 school in Roseville. As a teenager, Henry worked harvesting ice for the People's Ice Company in Shoreview. At the age of 17, he went to work for the Schmidt's Brewery. At age 18, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served his country in the Pacific Theatre of World War II.
Leonard Charles Hillstrom, 92, of Vergas, passed away Friday, August 5, 2011, at the Frazee Care Center in Frazee. A memorial service for Leonard will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, in the Vergas United Methodist Church with Reverend Gary Klempke officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. A luncheon will be hosted at the church following the service for all to attend. Interment will be made in the Vergas Village Cemetery following the service.
