The City of Detroit Lakes is floating a plan to run a well-traveled road through Long Lake Park. Yes, within 20 yard of the new playground equipment, the new kitchen and bathroom facilities the Eagles donated, the picnic area, yes, tarring over that beautiful park. How did we get here? The Becker County commissioners and the City of Detroit Lakes have not yet said "no" to the runway expansion at the airport. All this talk about big blizzards reminds me of the worst one I ever saw: The most severe blizzard in modern history struck in North Dakota and Minnesota on March 15, 1941. The blizzard hit on a Saturday while many were traveling, and thus claimed 71 lives. Winds gusted to 75 mph at Duluth, and reached 85 mph at Grand Forks, N.D. Snowdrifts 12 feet high were reported in north central Minnesota. A cold front traveling 30 mph crossed Minnesota in just seven hours. It here happened at 11 p.m.
