For months, the state's cattle and dairy industries had waited to see the practical consequences of the discovery of bovine tuberculosis in five northwestern Minnesota cattle herds. The other shoe finally dropped at the end of January when the U.S. Department of Agriculture removed Minnesota from the list of accredited-free states. Losing our "TB-free" status was expected, but it was unpleasant all the same.

With transportation demands growing, BNSF Railway will spend $400 million this year expanding rails, the head of the company told a Bismarck business group late last month. That includes hundreds of new locomotives. Matt Rose, president, chairman and chief executive officer, said BNSF and the nation's other six large railroads -- known as Class I -- are now growing faster than the economy as a whole. Rose was the main speaker at the Bismarck Mandan Develop-ment Association's annual meeting.
Harlan Lemke of Detroit Lakes hit the jackpot! The second line of Lemke's 10-line quick-pick ticket matched the winning numbers of 3-8-12-14-31 from the Feb. 20 drawing to win the $30,000 jackpot. Lemke purchased the winning ticket at County 6 Amoco & Bait in Detroit Lakes. A Northstar Cash jackpot worth $51,447 from the drawing on Sept. 4, 2005 has not yet been claimed. Northstar Cash players have one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prize.
The images of people's belongings destroyed by hurricane Katrina were vivid: family photographs and heirlooms, hand-made quilts and treasured keepsakes lost forever to destructive wind and water. But the slower deterioration of the things we cherish can be equally damaging. A free Minnesota Histo-rical Society workshop on March 28 will demonstrate the best ways to protect heirlooms from time. The program will begin at 7 p.m.

Amanda graduated from Perham High School and is employed by Hospice of the Red River Valley in Detroit Lakes. Keith graduated from Lake Park/Audubon High School and is employed by TEAM Industries in Audubon. An April 22nd wedding is planned at the United Methodist Church, Richville, with a church reception to follow.
