A group seeking to ban gay marriages has launched an advertising campaign against 12 Minnesota senators it claims are blocking a public vote on the issue. "The most out of touch with their constituents in the marriage debate" is how Jeff Davis described the dozen, mostly Democratic rural senators who have opposed a constitutional amendment against gay marriage. Davis is president of Minnesota Citizens in Defense of Marriage, one of two major groups pushing for an amendment that defines a marriage as being between one man and one woman. Judy Roy, longtime tribal secretary for the Red Lake Nation, has announced that she will be filing as a candidate for the Red Lake Tribal chairman in the upcoming election. In making the announcement, Roy said she wants to give other Red Lake members notice that the race for tribal secretary will not include an incumbent. Filing opened Friday. Roy has held the post since 1994. All three officer positions -- chairman, secretary and treasurer -- are open for the 2006 election May 17, as well as one representative from each of the four districts.
