Louis V. "Buddy" Simon, 79, of Waubun, died Saturday, June 13, 2009 in his home. Arrangements are pending with Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home of Mahnomen and Winger, Minn.
Aug. 17, 1931-June 10, 2009 Kenneth O. Ludemann, 77, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, June 10 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Kenneth was born to John and Anna (Lohse) Ludemann on Aug. 17, 1931, at Pelican Lake, near Pelican Rapids. He grew up and attended school in Barnesville, graduating from Barnesville High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. Ken married Rita Krauth on June 21, 1952 and they made their home in Moorhead. He worked for Sherwood Lumber and Fuel in Fargo for 34 years, eventually assuming ownership.
May 24, 1985-June 9, 2009 Blake R. Kragness, 24, of Wahpeton N.D., died on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at his home in Wahpeton. Blake Ryan Kragness was born to Duane and Patricia (Anderson) Kragness on May 24, 1985 in Breckenridge. He attended Pinedale Elementary School in Rapid City, S.D., and moved to Wahpeton in 1997. Blake graduated from Wahpeton High School in 2004 and had recently finished his studies at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis-St. Paul with a degree in sociology and criminal justice. His plans were to pursue a law degree.
Feb. 20. 1956-June 9, 2009 Russell W. Richter, 53, of Vergas, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at his parents' home, under the care of hospice, after a courageous battle with cancer. Russell W. Richter was born to Ralph and Wilma Richter on Feb. 20, 1956, in Perham. He attended District 98 Country School, finished grade school through high school in Perham and graduated in 1974. After high school, Russell attended Floriculture School in Eden Prairie, Minn. Russell was employed by Bergen's Greenhouse in Detroit Lakes for many years.
Former Bemidji and Williston, N.D., area resident Gertrude A. Kalil, 78, passed away Monday, June 8, 2009 in Charlotte, N.C., where she had been living for the past several months. Surviving Gertrude are her children, Terry Kalil of Detroit Lakes; Patty (Joe) Margarit of Bloomington, David (Candy Bar) Kalil of Rapid City, S.D., Dan (Kathy Hagen) Kalil of Williston, and Laurie (David) Metzger of Charlotte, N.C.; husband of 45 years, Charles D. (Bud) Kalil of Sun Lakes, Ariz., where he lives with his wife Gloria; 10 grandchildren and one great grandson; sisters Mary Jo (Ed) Datko of St.
Sept. 13, 1925-June 9, 2009 Richard M. Longfors, 83, of rural Osage, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at his residence. Richard M. Longfors was born to Arvid and Anne (Antilla) Longfors on Sept. 19, 1925 in Chisholm, Minne. In 1930, the family moved to rural Osage, where Richard attended District 82 Country School. He later graduated from Detroit Lakes High School, in 1943, tthen served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines and Europe. On July 20, 1947 Richard married Irene Racer in Osage.
Oct, 20, 1919-June 9, 2009 Oscar W. Allen, 89, of Faribault, Minn., died on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park. Oscar W., the son of Gustav and Alma Allen, was born on October 20, 1919 in Castle Rock. He married Mabel M. "Mae" Tuma on Oct. 1, 1942 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Faribault. She preceded him in death on Sept. 5, 2002.
May 9, 1920-June 9, 2009 Gertrude A. Hahn, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at Sunnyside Care Center in rural Lake Park. Gertrude was born to Max and Alma Hahn on May 9, 1920 in Thalheim, Germany. At the age of four, she moved with her family to America, wher she was raised and educated in Philadelphia and Dublin, Pa. Gertrude worked as a housekeeper in Atlantic City and Florida until retiring in 1990.
Oct. 4, 1974-June 6, 2009 Marie E. Thompson, 34, of White Earth, died Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Innovis Health in Fargo. Marie Edith Thompson was born to Robert TeJohn and Sandra K. Thompson on Oct. 4, 1974 in Detroit Lakes. She grew up in Minneapolis and White Earth, attending schools in Minneapolis, Bagley, Pine Point and Circle of Life. In 1992, Marie graduated from Heart of the Earth Survival School, where she was the class valedictorian. After finishing school, she moved back to White Earth. While in White Earth, Marie was employed at Shooting Star Casino.
June 28, 1929-June 4, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes area resident Rudy Moe, 79, of Bullock, N.C., passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 4, 2009. Rudy was born to Albert and Inga Moe on June 28, 1929 in St. Paul. He grew up in the Detroit Lakes area and attended Concordia State College, then Brigham Young University (BYU), where he met and later married Dora L. Saling, on Nov. 24, 1958. They raised their seven children in Orem, Utah. Rudy taught in the physical education department at BYU, 1958-87.
