Aug. 5, 1929-May 21, 2009 Lois A. Engstrand, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, May 21, 2009 in her home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Lois Adelaide Thorson was born to Albert and Jonnette (Dorseth) Thorson on Aug. 5, 1929 in Flom, Minn. She attended grade school in Flom and one year at Waubun High School. She then moved to International Falls, Minn., where she finished high school. Lois worked at a drug store in Fargo for a few years before she moved to Minneapolis, where she worked as a secretary for Durowall Concrete Company.
March 17, 1950-Dec. 31, 2008 Lynn Schirmer, 58, of Detroit Lakes, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 in Apache Junction, Ariz., of a massive heart attack. Lynn, the former owner of Lynn's Food Center, worked as a personal caregiver in Arizona during the winter and in Detroit Lakes during the summer. Surviving Lynn are his wife of 25 years, Ellen Schirmer; son, Erin Jay Schirmer; sister, Loretta Schirmer and her daughter; a special aunt, Lorraine Grobe; and special friend, Cory Rebne, all of Detroit Lakes. Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m.
Audubon native Lowell H. "Gil" Gilbertson, 89, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009, in Henderson, Nev. Lowell H. Gilbertson was born and raised in Audubon. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired as president of Nelson Laboratories in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1984. He and his wife Isabelle moved to Henderson, Nev., in 1998. Surviving Gil are his wife of 64 years, Isabelle (Kohler, of Detroit Lakes); daughter Deborah (Dick) Huber of Henderson, Nev.; son, L. Dean (Cathy) Gilbertson of Omaha, Neb.; and two grandchildren.
May 5, 2009-May 20, 2009 Josiah Anthony Brunner, precious infant son of Ryan Brunner and Rochelle Nelson of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully in the arms of his family on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Josiah was born on May 5, 2009 in Minneapolis, and passed away a short 15 days later. Surviving Josiah are his parents, Ryan Brunner and Rochelle Nelson of Detroit Lakes; his maternal grandparents, Paul (Janine) Nelson of Park Rapids and Lois Nelson of Detroit Lakes; his paternal grandparents, Marilyn (Richard) Soden of Salina, Kan.; maternal great grand
Oct. 8, 1910-March 29, 2009 Mabel C. Snartland, 98, of Lake Park, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park. Mabel C. Kroeger was born to John and Clarice (Kvistlen) Kroeger on Oct. 8, 1910 in Oakes, N.D. On July 7, 1947 she married Jacob O'Neil in Moorhead. Jacob died on Jan. 21, 1986. Surviving Mabel are her son, Robert Grace Sr. of Jordan, Minn.; one grandson and one great granddaughter. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband and a daughter, Sandra Lees. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 in Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
Former Park Rapids resident Claire L. Klarer, 90, of Lake Park, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park. Claire Lovisa Jordan was born to Herman and Myrtle (Hinton) Jordan on June 10, 1918 in Fergus Falls. As a small girl, she moved with her family to the Ponsford area, where she attended the Bongo Country School near her home. As a young woman Claire ventured to Oregon, where she worked for a time, and married Harry Edward Klarer of Ponsford.
May 23, 1916-Feb. 26, 2009 Grace B. (Cummins) Ford, 92, of Detroit Lakes, died February 26, 2009 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Grace Bishop was born to Carl and Bertha (Rice) Bishop on May 23, 1916 in Mitchellville, Iowa. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving Grace are her daughter, Sandra Ford; daughter-in-law, Judy Ford; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and five stepchildren. Preceding her in death were her husbands, Don J. Cummins and B. John Ford; son, Douglas Ford; and a brother, Ray Bishop. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m.
June 4, 1929-May 18, 2009 Norman J. Kmoch, 79, of Dent, Minn., died on Monday, May 18, 2009, on the family farm, under the care of his wife Laura and Lakeland Hospice. Norman John Kmoch was born to August and Bertha (Noess) Kmoch on June 4, 1929, at the family farm near Dent. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dent. Norman worked for Edling Electric until he was drafted, serving in the U.S. Army from January 1953 to November 1954. He attended North Dakota State University on the G.I. Bill, receiving his BS.E.
April 18, 1927-May 18, 2009 Alfred L. "Dudley" Moltzan, 82, of Frazee, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Alfred LaVerne Moltzan was born to Martin and Bertha (Kading) Moltzan on April 18, 1927, at their home near Vergas. He grew up and attended country school in Vergas, and worked in various jobs around the Vergas area. On Oct. 31, 1950, he married Betty Rusch at the Vergas parsonage. Alfred worked for Gigstead's Mink Ranch until later they moved to Pelican Rapids, where he worked for Flatin's Mink Ranch for many years.
May 5, 2009-May 14, 2009 Andreas John Brunner, precious infant son of Ryan Brunner and Rochelle Nelson of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully in the arms of his family on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Andreas was born May 5, 2009 at 2:38 p.m. in Minneapolis, and died a few short days thereafter.
