Dec. 19, 1930-Feb. 25, 2006 Marie I. Hanson, 75, of Perham, died Saturday, February 25, 2006 at the Perham Memorial Home, after a brief struggle with cancer. Marie Isabelle Brown, the daughter of Claude and Cleoria Brown, was born December 19, 1930 in Richville, Minn. She attended school through the 10th grade, and then went to work for Scott Atwater Outboard Motors in St. Paul, until the business moved out west. When Marie returned to Richville, she worked at the egg plant in Perham, Tuffy's and the café -- she loved to talk to people.
DL Newspapers recently reported events regarding administrative changes in the Detroit Lakes School District that makes one wonder if local school district administrators might not be taking lessons from the "Old Boys Club." Lowell Niklaus resigned from his superintendent position, but first created himself a new position so he can, he said, "finish my career in education doing what I really want to do." Niklaus is even willing to forfeit his old salary and benefits of about $135,000 a year, work only 217 days a year and not have to be paid for vacation and holidays at his new job.

Non-offending parents group Lakes Crisis & Resource Center is offering a support/informational group for non-offending parents of sexually abused children. The focus will be supporting the parents, or any other significant person in that child's life, as well as providing information as to what they may be experiencing due to the victimization. The group will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-6:30 starting March 21. Registration is required.
Thursday, Feb. 23 at 10:49 a.m., a Detroit Lakes woman reported an attempted residential break-in. Friday, Feb. 24 at 8:36 a.m., a car bumper and license plate was found on the Canadian Pacific tracks in Detroit Lakes. The car owner denied driving the vehicle, which was involved in a hit-and-run accident involving a parked vehicle in Detroit Lakes, although she was a passenger. The owner told Detroit Lakes police she did not know who was driving her car. at 5:22 p.m., a Detroit Lakes house fire was reported. The fire apparently started on the kitchen stove.

All Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party precinct caucuses in Becker County will be held at one location on Tuesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at the Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes. DFLers can attend the 7 p.m. precinct caucus and sign up to attend the Becker County DFL County Convention, which will begin at 8:15 p.m. on the same night, also at the MSCTC. Delegates to the 8:15 p.m. Becker County DFL Convention are selected at the 7 p.m. precinct caucuses, according to DFL Chair Cyndi Anderson.
50 Years ago Feb. 29, 1956 -- Detroit Lakes will have a new industry in operation by June of this year. Decision of an Austin toy manufacturing firm to move its headquarters to Detroit Lakes came as the result of a series of meetings between the Detroit Lakes Industrial Development Corporation and members of the Austin firm. Ten March of Dimes coin collectors have been stolen recently from Detroit Lakes businesses.
Minnesota Music Teachers Association winners will perform as part of the Sunday Recital Series Sunday, March 5, in the Historical Holmes Theatre. Proceeds from the freewill concert will be divided between Playhouse 412, Historic Holmes Theatre Yamaha Piano Fund and the MMTA's Scholarship Awards. Performances begin at 2 p.m.
The cast and crew of Wadena-Deer Creek High School received the Wells Fargo Spotlight On The Arts Award of Excellence for their production of "Clown of God" at the Class A One Act Play Festival. The award program is part of the Spotlight on the Arts campaign, a program established by Wells Fargo and the MSHSL to increase awareness for high school fine arts activities. In April, top state contenders in speech also will receive the Spotlight on the Arts Award of Excellence. Wells Fargo is the premier corporate sponsor of the MSHSL.
