Dec. 24, 1911-Aug. 11, 2009 Alice L. Gramm, of 97, Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Alice Louise Phillips was born to Guy and Maisie (Talbert) Phillips on Dec. 24, 1911 in Pelican Rapids, and was a 1931 graduate of Pelican Rapids High School. Following graduation, she attended Mayville State Teachers College in Mayville, N.D., for a year. Alice married Ralph Paulson on Jan. 28, 1933 in Pelican Rapids.
April 24, 1968-Aug. 7, 2009 Rochelle M. Varnum, 41, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, August 7, 2009 in her home. Rochelle Marie Austin was born to John and Elsie (Barnhill) Austin on April 24, 1968 in Auburn, Calif.
July 10, 1927-Aug. 7, 2009 Wayne L. Lavalier, 82, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, August 7, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Wayne Leslie Lavalier was born to Frank J. and Marie S. (Carlson) Lavalier on July 10, 1927 in Bovey, Minn., where he was raised and educated. Following his education, he served with the U.S. Navy, 1945-52. During his service he was a pattern cutter, serving aboard the USS Swift near Korea. He later served in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Wayne married Olga Blanco in 1953 in Cuba.
June 13, 1924-Aug. 6, 2009 Robert G. Shaw, 85, of Frazee, died Thursday, August 6. 2009 at the Frazee Care Center. Robert Glen Shaw was born to Glen and Louise (Schmelz) Shaw on June 13, 1924 in Fosston, Minn. He grew up and graduated from high school in Frazee. After graduation, he farmed with his parents and hauled cream for the Frazee Creamery. Bob married Helen Johnson July 1, 1946 in Frazee. They operated their own dairy farm south of Frazee until 1963, when health issues forced Robert to choose a different career.
Feb. 28, 1927-Aug. 7, 2009 Lake Melissa summer resident William L. Spotts, 82, of Bismarck, N.D., died Friday, August 7, 2009, at his home, with his loving family by his side. William L. Spotts was born to William P. and Florence (Anderson) Spotts on Feb. 28, 1927, in Crookston, Minn. He grew up and was educated in Jamestown, N.D. While in school, Bill enjoyed participating in sports, especially football. William enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1944 and was honorably discharged as an RM 2/C in May 1946.
Oct. 13, 1930-Aug. 5, 2009 Former Vergas area resident Stanley R. Glawe, 78, of Dilworth, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead. Stanley Robert Glawe was born to Walter and Margaret (McKenzie) Glawe on Oct. 13, 1930, on the family farm near Vergas. He grew up there, helping on the farm, attending rural country school and later Frazee High School. After high school he continued farming until enlisting in the U.S. Army in November 1953. He served until 1955, when he returned to the family farm. On Oct.
May 14, 1928-Aug. 6, 2009 Former Lake Park area resident Elmer W. Barwin, 81, of Moorhead passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at Triumph Hospital in Fargo. Elmer was born to Fred and Pauline (Wallman) Barwin on May 14, 1928 in Ortonville, Minn., where he grew up and attended school. After graduating from high school there in 1947, Elmer enlisted in the National Guard and was activated in January of 1951. He served until November of 1952, when he moved back to Ortonville and later to Morris, Minn. On Sept.
March 11, 1911-Aug. 3, 2009 George I. Wokasch, 98, of Frazee, died Monday, August 3, 2009, at the Frazee Care Center. George Ignatz Wokasch was born to Ignatz and Catherine (Henn) Wokasch on March 11, 1911 in Frazee, in the same house where he lived until entering the Frazee Care Center in July of 2004. As a young boy, George served as an altar boy when Lake Park was a mission church. After graduation from high school in 1929, George worked at the Aldrich Grocery until he enlisted in the military in February 1941.
Aug. 5, 1930-Aug. 3, 2009 Vaughn F. "Casey" Stengl, 78, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, August 3, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Vaughn "Casey" Stengl was born to Joseph and Anna K. (Damschen) Stengl on Aug. 5, 1930 in Ray, N.D. He was raised and educated in Pelican Rapids, along with Detroit Lakes. After school, he enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country during the Korean War with the Signal Corps. After his honorable discharge, Casey returned home and started working for Swift and Company. On Feb.
Nov. 16, 1959-July 31, 2009 Kim L. Leitheiser, 49, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, July 31, 2009 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Kim L. Anderson was born to Robert and Deloris (Thelen) Anderson on Nov. 16, 1959 in Renton, Wash. She grew up and attended school in Audubon and Detroit Lakes, graduating from Audubon High school in 1978. She then traveled the United States with a sales company for the next three years, before returning to Detroit Lakes. On Oct. 13, 1984 she married Steven Leitheiser in Detroit Lakes.
