Aug. 6, 1935-March 6, 2010 Detroit Lakes native Shirley Ann McCarty, 74, of Sammamish, Wash., passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, Wash. Shirley was born to Michael and Elva Winter August 6, 1935 in Ogema. She was raised in Detroit Lakes, where she graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1953. Following high school Shirley went to work at the local Super Value Grocery. On March 15, 1958 Shirley married Bob McCarty in White Earth. They lived in Minnesota until 1967 when they moved to the Wallingford District of Seattle.
Oct. 4, 1957-March 5, 2010 Donald Thomas Hewitt, 52, of Frazee, passed away peacefully at his Rose Lake home on Friday, March 5, 2010 after a courageous two year battle with cancer. Don was one of four children born to the late Kathryn (Farmer) and Harry "Hardy" Hewitt on October 4, 1957 in Minto, N.D. He was the beloved husband of Cindy (Peterson) Hewitt for over 26 years and father to twins Ashley and Jamie, whom he adored and cherished. Don was dedicated to his work at Strata Corporation for 21 years.
May 22, 1984-March 5, 2010 Tabitha T. Janssen, 25, of Ottertail, Minn., passed away Friday, March 5, 2010 from injuries suffered in a car accident in rural Detroit Lakes Tabitha was born to Dennis and Debra (Wischnak) Herk on May 22, 1984 in St. Paul. She attended school in Detroit Lakes, where she was active in the gymnastic program and also helped coach the Minnesota Flyers. Tabitha was known for her kind, outgoing, loving and caring personality. She married Jordan Janssen on September 17, 2005.
Former Wolf Lake area resident June Mursu, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Friends may call at Christ Lutheran Church, Wolf Lake, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, and at the church for one hour prior to Wednesday's services. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10 at Christ Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake. Interment services will be held at the Spruce Grove-Union Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Wevley Funeral Home of Sebeka.
Dec. 4, 1914-March 2, 2010 Victor Osten, 95, of Pelican Rapids, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Pelican Valley Nursing Home in Pelican Rapids. Victor Allen Osten was born the son of Martin Andreas (Andrew) Simon Osten and Thea Matilde (Hovland) Osten on December 4, 1914 in Pelican Rapids. He was born in the farmhouse built by his grandfather, Simon Osten, a first generation immigrant from Norway. He was the youngest of nine children born to Andrew and Thea. On October 24, 1937, Victor was united in marriage to Alma Christine Johnson at Ringsaker Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids.
Former Detroit Lakes resident Jeanette Ann Tobkin Carlson, 70, of Rochester, Minn., died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at her home in Rochester. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 25 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester. Macken Funeral Home of Rochester was in charge of the arrangements.
March 11, 1936-Feb. 28, 2010 Thomas Joseph Day was born March 11, 1936, in Minneapolis and passed away at his home in Fargo on Sunday, February 28, 2010, with his five children, loving attendants, and Hospice of the Red River Valley by his side. He grew up in Detroit Lakes, where he was a star athlete in football, basketball, and track at Detroit Lakes High School.
May 9, 1929-Feb. 27, 2010 Former Detroit Lakes resident Landes A. Jensen, 80, of Belvidere, Ill., passed away at his home on Saturday, February 27, 2010. Landes was born the son of Henry L. and Clara (Thorson) Jensen on May 9,1929 in Eckman, N.D. He graduated from high school in Forest River, N.D., then went on to graduate from North Dakota State University in Fargo and Worsham's College of Mortuary Science in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a corpsman, O.R. tech and embalmer at the Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Aug. 29, 1928-Feb. 28, 2010 Former Detroit Lakes resident Roger M. Hillman, 81, of Ramsey, Minn., died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Minneapolis VA Medical Center, Minneapolis. Roger was born the son of Martin and Gladys (Geesa) Hillman on August 29, 1928 in Ashland, Wis. He graduated from high school in 1947 at Spooner, Wis. Roger enlisted in the United States Air Force in October of 1947 and served until October 1951 as a radio operator. Roger attended Northern Colorado College. He was united in marriage to Alyce Warter on December 26, 1962 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Frazee.
William A. "Willy" Dillon, 18, of Detroit Lakes, passed away Friday, February 26, 2010 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, continuing one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 3 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. Interment will be made in Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.
