Oct. 4, 1941-Feb. 13, 2006 Detroit Lakes native Peter E. "Pete" Specht, 64, of Buffalo, Minn., died Monday, February 13, 2006 at the Buffalo Hospital. Peter Ernest Specht, the son of Ernest and Doris (Nelson) Specht, was born on Oct. 4, 1941 in Detroit Lakes, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1959. Following high school, Pete attended Moorhead State College and graduated in 1964. He married Gayle Carlson in 1965 in Rockford, Ill. The couple made their home in Audubon, where Pete began a 35-year teaching career.
A Detroit Lakes woman was sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony charge Monday. District Judge John Pearson stayed execution of a 15-month prison sentence against Jamie Danzeisen, 34, of 215 East Central Street. Danzeisen must serve nine months in jail with credit for time served, was placed on supervised probation for up to 10 years and was fined $587. Danzeisen was charged with fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, stemming from an Oct. 29, 2005, arrest in Detroit Lakes for methamphetamine.
Outdoors enthusiasts hope the eighth time is a charm for their favorite programs getting new money. They have tried with no success since 1999 to convince legislators to dedicate some of the Minnesota sales tax to hunting, fishing and related uses. Sen.
New federal figures that show Minnesotans pay more taxes than a decade ago is a mixture of good and bad news. Lynn Reed of the nonpartisan Minnesota Taxpayers Association said higher personal income is the reason for higher tax bills. Political leaders said that is good news for the state, although taken out of context it does look bad. Newly released federal Census Bureau figures show the average Minnesotan paid nearly $2,900 in state taxes (not including federal or local taxes) in 2004, compared to almost $1,900 in 1994.
May 9, 1937-Feb. 12, 2006 Gerald D. "Jerry" Marquardt, 68, of Vergas, died on Sunday, February 12, 2006 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. Gerald Dean Marquardt was born to Harry and Hilda (Wahl) Marquardt on May 9, 1937 in Pelican Rapids. He was raised near Vergas, where he attended a country school and helped on the family farm. Jerry married Gail Sprouls on Nov. 3, 1956 at St. Paul's Lutheran Loon Lake Church. He worked at Franklin Fence and Paul's Insulation in Vergas. Jerry loved woodworking, making shelves, cabinets and Christmas decorations.
Dec. 23, 1929-Feb. 10, 2006 Rev. Henry V. Buchholz, 76, of Richville, Minn., died Friday, February 10, 2006, at Perham Memorial Hospital, Perham. Henry was born to Clarence and Anna (Schultz) Buchholz on Dec. 23, 1929, in Minneapolis. He was baptized on Jan. 12, 1930, and confirmed his faith on May 30, 1943. He graduated from Wadena High School in 1947, and then attended Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis. Henry served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-55. He graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Ill., in 1963, and was ordained into the ministry on June 9, 1963.
Sept. 19, 1915-Feb. 10, 2006 Opal F. Gwynn, 90, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, February 10, 2006 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Opal Florence Halvorson, the daughter of Halvor and Mulla Halvorson, was born Sept. 19, 1915 in Pine Creek, Minn. She was the fifth of 10 kids in the family, and grew up in Minnesota with her parents and siblings. Opal was married to Lester Gwynn in 1935; they remained married for 46 years, until Lester's death in 1981. Together they raised four sons, moving between Minnesota and California.
May 26, 1977-Feb. 11, 2006 Former Detroit Lakes resident Mark Piche, 28, of Breckenridge, Colo., died Saturday, February 11, 2006 in Breckenridge. Mark Benjamin Clifford Piche was born to Ben and Sylvia (Bevolden) Piche on May 26, 1977 in Crookston, Minn. He came to Detroit Lakes with his family in 1981, and attended Detroit Lakes Public Schools. After completing school, he worked in the Detroit Lakes area doing sheet rock work, and later drove a delivery truck for Beverage Wholesalers of Detroit Lakes. Mark moved to Dillon, Colo., in 2001 and to Breckenridge, Colo., in 2004.
Feb. 3, 1921-Feb. 8, 2006 Gertrude "Gert" E. Reynolds, 85, of rural Nevis, Minn., passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids. Gertrude Evelyn Hewitt was born to Colby and Louise (Redepenning) Hewitt on Feb. 3, 1921 in Dorset, Minn., where Gert attended school through the eighth grade. She went on to attend Park Rapids High School, graduating with the class of 1939. During her teen years, Gert was active in Walter League at the First English Lutheran Church in Dorset, and also worked for her father at the Farmer State Bank in Dorset.
