April 22, 1925-May 8, 2009 Merlin E. Anderson, 84, of Frazee, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center. Merlin E. Anderson was born to Ernest G. and Alice Christopherson Anderson on April 22, 1925 in Hettinger County, N.D., where he attended country school. Merlin farmed with his dad until 1948, when he married Betty L. Scrogham of Mott, N.D. During their honeymoon they purchased a farmstead north of Detroit Lakes, near Oak Lake, where they lived for 50 years. Early in life, Merlin raised sheep, beef, and various grain crops and milked dairy cattle.
Nov. 29, 1947-May 9, 2009 Larry N. Engen, 61, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 in his residence. Larry N. Engen was born to Herbran (Bob) and Gilma (Heier) Engen on Nov. 29, 1947 in Hawley. As a young boy, he moved to Detroit Lakes, where he received his education, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1965. He married Ruth E. Coughlin on Sept. 5, 1969 in Detroit Lakes. Over the years, Larry worked at Gasport and also Lakes Ford in Detroit Lakes. He then started his career driving truck. He hauled the U.S. Mail, petroleum, turkeys, and chickens.
Feb. 12, 1926-May 4, 2009 Verna R. Nysetvold, 83, of Twin Valley, died Monday, May 4, 2009, at the Palliative Care Unit in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Verna Ruth Knutson was born the daughter of Ole and Margaret (Syvertsen) Knutson on Feb. 12, 1926, in Ulen, where she grew up and attended school. As a young woman, Verna graduated from Moorhead Teacher's School. She taught at a rural school near Sebeka before marrying Arnt Nysetvold on April 10, 1949 in Ulen. The couple made their home in Twin Valley, where they raised seven children.
June 14, 1947-May 6, 2009 Timothy L. Sweeney, 61, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Timothy L. Sweeney was born to Raymond F. and Elsie (Albright) Sweeney on June 14, 1947 in Fargo. In 1953, the family moved to the northwest side of Floyd Lake in rural Detroit Lakes. Tim attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and was a 1966 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. In the summer of 1966, Tim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Henry Clay (SSBN625), attaining the rank of TM2 (SU).
John M. Robbins, 80, Ponsford, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, in the VA Medical Center in Fargo, N.D. John Marvin Robbins was born Feb. 24, 1929, in Martel, Iowa to John and Jesse (Osborn) Robbins. During his younger years, he attended rural school near Martel where John would travel to school by horseback. In 1946, he enlisted with the United States Navy and served overseas in the Philippines attaining the rank of Seaman 2nd Class. After being honorably discharged in 1947, he went back to Iowa and starting working as a mechanic for a construction crew.
Lorena Castor, 88, died May 6, 2009, in her home. Lorena Eileen Castor was born May 1, 1921, to John and Austa Goeller on the family homestead near Fairbank, Iowa. She received her degree in Elementary Education from Upper Iowa University. She is remembered for being a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She was famous for her fried chicken and cherry pie. She loved to fish, bowl and was an avid Vikings, Twins and Gophers fan. Through her needlework and sewing keepsakes, her legacy will live on.
Sept. 30, 1925-May 1, 2009 Abbie A. Boyer, 83, De-troit Lakes, died Friday, May 1, 2009, in St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Abbie Adeline Tignor was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Lake Park to George and Florence (Kelso) Tignor. She moved with her family to Sioux City, Iowa, and Auburn, Neb., prior to moving to Audubon in 1939. Abbie attended Audubon Public Schools. She married Paul Boyer in Lake Park on Jan. 4, 1945. They farmed near Audubon until 1979. Abbie entered St.
Susan Ann Lenarz, 66, Maple Grove, died Monday, May 4, 2009. She is survived two sons, John (Mary), Paul; a daughter, Marie Lenarz, and three grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Nancy Radeck. A memorial service is Friday, May 8, at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Brooklyn Park. Visitation is at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is in St. Vin-cent Cemetery, Osseo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family. Evans-Nordby Funeral Home, Osseo, is taking care of arrangements.
LaVonne Bonnie Storm, 63, Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, in St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. LaVonne Storm, known as Bonnie, was born May 28, 1945, in Detroit Lakes to William and Alice (Livingood) Storm. Bonnie was a 1963 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School and attended Moorhead State College for two years; she then spent time in California. Bonnie was united in marriage with Wayne Kittelson on Dec. 23, 1966, in Detroit Lakes. They lived in Omaha, Neb.
Maizie L. Lembke, 84, Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, in St. Mary's Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes. Maizie was born on April 15, 1925, the daughter of Frank and Phoebe (Bingham) Roberts in Minersville, Utah. She was raised in Minersville, until moving to Long Beach, Calif., where she graduated from high school. After graduation, she worked at a Lockheed Defense Plant as a riveter during World War II. Maizie was united in marriage to Melvin A. Lembke on June 1, 1946, in Van Nuys, Calif. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1958, and raised their three sons on Little Floyd Lake.
