April 2, 1930-March 6, 2009 Norma J. Neitzke, 78, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Norma Jean Courneya was born to Garnett and Myrtle (Fingalson) Courneya on April 2, 1930 in Detroit Lakes, and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1949. She received a scholarship to attend the Gerrard School of Music in Chicago, Ill. She worked for the Wilcox Lumber Yard in Detroit Lakes. Norma married Dr. Joseph G. Neitzkeon June 9, 1952 in Detroit Lakes. She taught piano lessons for Mathison Music Store.
Feb. 23, 1908-March 5, 2009 Marvel V. Henderson, 101, of Detroit Lakes died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Marvel was born to Albert and Lydia (Pierson) Henrichs on Feb. 23, 1908 in Russell, Minn. Her family lived in southern Minnesota and also in Canada for a few years. On Dec. 20, 1927 she married Clarence Henderson. They farmed in Page, N.D., for several years, later moving to Fargo.
Dec. 20, 1944-March 4, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Dennis E. Makey, 64, of Grand Island, Neb., died Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Grand Island Veteran's Home, Grand Island. Dennis was born to George and Mildred (Solmon) Makey on Dec. 20, 1944 in Duluth, Minn., where he was also baptized. After World War II, the family moved back to Detroit Lakes, where Dennis attended grade school at Washington Elementary. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. Dennis graduated from high school in 1962.
March 13, 1928-Feb. 28, 2009 Doris A. Eklund, 80, of Ulen died Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen. Doris Arloween Hove was born to Conrad and Mearl (Ashmore) Hove on March 13, 1928 in rural Ulen Township. She was baptized at Atlanta Lutheran Church and later confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Growing up, Doris attended Ulen Public School and graduated with the class of 1946. Following high school, she went to Business College in Detroit Lakes. On Jan. 29, 1950, Doris married Donald Eklund at the Bethlehem Lutheran Parsonage in Ulen.
Feb. 25, 1941-Feb. 27, 2009 Thelma Wang, 68, of Waubun, died Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Mahnomen Health Center Hospital. Thelma Ilene Rawley was born the oldest child of Rose (Morgan) and Jerry Rawley, Sr. on Feb. 25, 1941 in White Earth. While she was growing up, Thelma's dad worked construction and therefore, the family moved quite often and lived in several towns throughout Montana and Wyoming, and mostly wintered in Fargo. As a young lady, Thelma started her own family and had decided her children weren't going to be uprooted when they started school.
Feb. 25, 1917-March 2, 2009 Harriet E. Peterson, 92, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday March 2, 2009 in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Harriet Elizabeth Hemmer was born the daughter of Fred and Alice (Kelley) Hemmer on Feb. 25, 1917 in Litchville, N.D. In 1922, Harriet moved with her family to Hastings, where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Hastings High School. She continued her education at Valley City State University in Valley City. She taught rural school near Litchville, Galesburg and Horace, N.D. On Dec. 22, 1940 she married Arthur Peterson in Moorhead.
Dec. 21, 1913-March 3, 2009 Leone B. Stolz, 95, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, March 03, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Leone was born the daughter of Raymond and Dora (Green) DeWitt on Dec. 21, 1913, in Lakeview Township, rural Detroit Lakes. She attended country school in Lakeview Township. As a young adult, she helped on the family farm and cleaned cottages in the Shoreham area. Leone married Kenneth Sauer on July 9, 1936 in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in rural Pelican Rapids before returning to Lakeview Township, where they farmed.
Jan. 16, 1914-March 1, 2009 Erma A. Terway, 95, of Fergus Falls, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009, at the Pioneer Retirement Community in Fergus Falls. Erma was born the daughter of Carl and Antonette (Varicek) Schmidt on Jan. 16, 1914 in St. Paul. Erma graduated from high school in Tracy, Minn. She subsequently attended Anker Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. During World War II, she worked at the clinic at Douglas Aircraft Company, where she met her husband, Vere Terway. They were married on Aug.
April 17, 1908-March 1, 2009 Former Lake Park resident Vernette Christensen, 100, of Detroit Lakes, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Vernette Severson was born the daughter of Peter and Severina Severson on April 17, 1908 at Lake Park. She graduated from Lake Park High School and went on to attend St. Cloud State College. In 1948 she married Orris Christensen at Lake Park. Vernette worked for her brother, Kermit, at Severson's Clothing Store in Lake Park for many years. She was a member of Lake Park Lutheran Church.
Aug. 7, 1927-Feb. 27, 2009 Dean R. Crosby, 81, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, February 27, 2009 at his residence. Dean R. Crosby was born to Harold and Johanna (Hanson) Crosby on Aug. 7, 1927 in Rolla, N.D. They moved to Bemidji when Dean was a young boy. He attended school in Bemidji and Blackduck, Minn., and from 1945-47, he served in the Army Air Force during World War II. On Sept. 9, 1947 Dean married Jeannine Potter in Red Lake Falls, Minn. They lived in Detroit Lakes and Dean worked at the Amour Stockyards in West Fargo.
