Students from the Lake Park Audubon High School dug deep into their savings to help families in the school district receive food baskets for the Thanksgiving holiday break. The National Honor Society sponsored their annual Food Fund Drive that helps to support the food baskets put together by Marge Beaudine, the Elementary Student Council advisor, and her helper elves. "We had an overwhelming response from the secondary students and faculty," stated NHS adviser Cheryl Hogie. "It was very heartwarming to see their compassion and fun competitive spirit.
Two Detroit Lakes students were recently awarded scholarships from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Hannah Eikren, the child of Lon and Sallie Eikren, received a $4,000 University Scholarship and intends to major in elementary education.
Minnesota State University Moorhead will award degrees to about 430 students during its fall commencement program this Thursday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. in the university's Nemzek Fieldhouse. Christopher Johnson, executive director of the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center in Fargo, will be the commencement speaker.
At 1:22 a.m. Monday (Dec. 12), a vehicle travelling along Highway 22 in Detroit Lakes went off the road and rolled over into a creek. The driver of the car, John Roger Jacobsen, of Lake Park, along with two passengers, Jessica Marie Lee, of Lake Park, and Jocelyn Ranae Ripley, of Fargo, were all transported to St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes for medical treatment. The extent of the occupant's injuries is yet unknown.

Author Jerry Mevissen will read from his newest book, "That Reminds Me," on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. at An Open Book in Wadena. "The Reminds Me" is a collection of stories, poems, essays, and one-scene plays that illuminate small town life in northern Minnesota. Hailey Seitz, Detroit Lakes, is among 118 students who will graduate from Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., at 2016 winter commencement ceremonies set for this Saturday, Dec. 10. Seitz will receive her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the Millicent Atkins School of Education, in a ceremony set to begin at 10:30 a.m. inside the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center.
Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center, along with the Sanford Health Foundation, is hosting 'Change In 24' — a 24-hour, online giving event on Dec. 15 to raise funds for RMCC patients traveling for treatment. 100 percent of funds raised in the 24-hour period will directly impact patients who need assistance with transportation, lodging, and other financial hardships related to cancer treatments. Patient volumes at RMCC continue to increase, and more than half of the patients treated at RMCC travel from outside Fargo/Moorhead, often traveling hours to receive care.

Average retail gasoline prices in Minnesota have risen 5.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.03/gallon yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 2,856 gas outlets in Minnesota. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.18/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
