ST. PAUL, MN — Joined by Minnesota Housing Commissioner Mary Tingerthal and community leaders, Governor Mark Dayton announced $80 million in funding to create and preserve 1,831 affordable housing units throughout the state. These investments will leverage private and local resources to support $300 million in total development costs and support more than 2,800 jobs.
Minnesota firearms hunters registered 68,958 deer during the first two days of firearms deer season, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Preliminary numbers from opening weekend show that the number of deer registered fell 3 percent from 2015. Of the deer harvested, 67 percent were bucks, compared to 68 percent of the first weekend harvest of 2015.
In honor of Veterans' Day, Tom Frank of Detroit Lakes submitted this information about the John Bridges American Legion Post 15 in Detroit Lakes. John Bridges, who farmed near Abby Lake, just south of Detroit Lake, was a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I. He was a medic who was killed by German hand grenade at age 25 in Ypres, France. He is buried in Lijssenthoek military cemetery in Belgium.
Average retail gasoline prices in Minnesota have fallen 4.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.04/gallon yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 2,856 gas outlets in Minnesota. This compares with the national average that has increased 0.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.21/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

The deck of a Little Floyd Lake home caught fire around 2 p.m. on election day (Tuesday). The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it left a large hole in the upper-level deck of the residence, warping the siding and ruining a garden bed beneath. The resident was not home at the time of the fire, but a neighbor called it in, reporting seeing smoke and flames. The Becker County Sheriff's Office and Detroit Lakes Fire Department responded to the incident. No one was reported injured, and the fire was out in about 20 minutes.
On Nov. 5 at 12:24 p.m. the Becker County Sheriff's Office received a report of a male being shot in the leg. The victim was identified as David Shaw, 45, of Lake Park. The incident occurred while two groups of hunters were hunting the same public land near 130th Avenue just north of the County line in Cormorant Township of Becker County. While one of the parties was shooting at a deer on the public land, one of the shots struck Shaw in the leg. Shaw was then transported by Air Care to Sanford Hospital in Fargo.
