Dr. Brent Henkes, a friend of Dr. Dave Weckwerth, has purchased the companion animal portion of Weckwerth Animal Hospital in Pelican Rapids and took over as chief of staff as of Jan. 1. Henkes has been practicing veterinary medicine in the Brainerd lakes area for the past 10 years. In 2003, he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University.

Consumers in the U.S. saw gasoline prices steam to a record average price in February, but the motor fuel market cooled considerably in March. Contrary to public perception, average first quarter 2013 gas prices averaged below 2012 numbers, according to GasBuddy, which tracks gasoline prices online. In fact, Americans paid about 30 cents per gallon less for gasoline in the most recent Easter Weekend than they paid over the same period in 2012.
An estimated one in three Minnesota homes harbors high levels of radon. However, testing for the radioactive gas before buying or selling a home can lead to reduced health risks, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, with more than 21,000 deaths attributable to radon each year. It is the greatest environmental cancer risk and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Yet radon exposure is largely preventable.

With prom and graduation right around the corner, it’s a good time for parents to reinforce safe driving habits in their children. April, May and June combined for the highest percentage of unbelted teen deaths during the past three years, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. There were 30 teen motor vehicle occupant deaths in April, May and June during the past three years, and 63 percent (19) of those killed were not buckled up.

The criticism of a possible merger between Sanford Health of Sioux Falls and Fargo and Fairview Health Services of Minneapolis is more political posturing than honest consideration of the merits. The debate has degenerated into parochialism, name-calling and an attempt to characterize Sanford’s benefactor, Denny Sanford, as a predatory banker, which is little more than character assassination.
The Woods N Wheels ATV Club based in Detroit Lakes is proud to present members of the Trail Ambassador Program sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. To become a trail ambassador, each member is required to be a DNR Certified Youth Safety Instructor. This course is a self-study program that includes classroom training and a hands-on practical test. Once volunteers are certified as instructors, they register with the DNR Safety and Education section and spend a very full day of classroom training in the ways of the Volunteer Trail Ambassador Program.
