Gov. Mark Dayton has proclaimed March 17-23 as Minnesota Agriculture Week. The designation is an effort to raise awareness of the positive and important contributions agriculture makes to Minnesota’s economy and its people. Minnesota agriculture generated $18.5 billion in cash receipts and $6.8 billion in exports in 2011, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. More than 10 percent of the jobs in Minnesota are linked to agriculture.
Twenty-two members of the Perham High School choir sang in the Big Apple recently, including two planned performances at popular New York City landmarks as well as impromptu shows throughout the city. Last week’s trip was the third trip to New York City taken by Perham choir students in the last decade. Although the group received a $2,200 grant from the school district’s 549 Foundation, each of the kids earned their own way through massive fundraising efforts over the last three years.
A Frazee man has been sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony drug possession charge. Jeremy Jeff Pihlaja, 35, of 18879 Blauert Road, Frazee, was given a stay of sentence imposition on conditions including completion of 60 days in jail and up to five years of supervised probation, as well as payment of $1,085 in court fines and fees. If he successfully completes probation, the felony charge will be reduced to a misdemeanor conviction on his record.
A Detroit Lakes man has been charged in Becker County District Court with one felony count of third degree burglary. Andrew John Dahlsad, 19, of 601 Holmes St. W., Detroit Lakes, is accused of breaking into a Detroit Lakes restaurant during the early morning hours of July 25 and taking the cash from two registers inside.
Sen. Kent Eken and Rep. Paul Marquart will hold a town meeting March 25 in the Detroit Lakes High School Library at 9 a.m. to hear from residents on important state issues. Eken and Marquart will host eight meetings in the area to hear residents’ ideas and concerns regarding the state’s budget, education funding, property tax relief, long-term care and other rural issues.
A single mother of two teen daughters told me this story last month. The mother is finishing her degree at Bemidji State University and she drives 50 miles to classes three days each week. She leaves for school about the same time as her daughters and the last thing they ask her before she leaves is, “Have you done your homework Mom?” That question is undoubtedly followed by a smirk.
A Detroit Lakes man has been sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of receiving stolen property. Arlan Ray Bergstrom Jr., 20, of 424 W. Central Ave., Detroit Lakes, was ordered to serve 12 months and one day in prison, stayed on conditions including completion of a 61-day jail sentence (already served) and up to five years of supervised probation, as well as payment of $1,160 in fines and fees, plus $2,772 in restitution.
The Detroit Lakes Schools Band program will present their 49th annual All City Band Festival Grand Concert on Saturday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. As in past years, the senior high gymnasium will fill the floor to capacity with instrumental performers from the Middle School and Senior High Bands participating. Erika Svanoe, from Bemidji State University, Bemidji Minnesota, (BSU) is this year’s guest conductor/clinician.
A Moorhead man has been sentenced in Becker county District Court on a charge of receiving stolen property. Adam Todd Thielges, 25, of 1224 15th Ave. N., Moorhead, was given a 13-month prison sentence, stayed on conditions including completion of 163 days in jail (already served), up to five years of supervised probation and payment of a $210 fine and fees, plus $473 restitution for damages. A second charge of misdemeanor drug possession was dismissed.
Detroit Lakes will be getting a heavy dose of archery over the next four months. Heart of Lakes Bowhunters (HOLB) organization president, Kyle Aho, recently announced that the Minnesota State Archery Association (MSAA) has awarded three state archery tournaments to the local club based in Detroit Lakes.
