STARBUCK, Minn. — Minnesota State Parks have latched onto the latest trend in water sports by making stand up paddle boards available for rent at a select number of pilot sites, including Starbuck’s Glacial Lakes State Park. Called “SUP” by the in-the-know-crowd, stand up paddle boarding involves standing on a board similar to a surf board and propelling yourself around a lake with a long paddle. The goal is to keep your balance, not fall off and have fun and get some exercise.

DULUTH – With Minnesota’s estimated wolf population down about 25 percent from recent years, state Department of Natural Resources officials will allow fewer wolf hunting and trapping licenses this fall, the agency announced Monday. The DNR has set the statewide target harvest of wolves at 220, down from last year’s target of 400. The season will open Nov. 9, opening day of Minnesota’s firearms deer season. “The changes are a management response to the most recent wolf population estimate,” said Dan Stark, the DNR’s large carnivore specialist.
HAWLEY, Minn. – A fatal house fire here Sunday morning was caused by the accidental ignition of materials surrounding an improperly installed electrical outlet, Lt. Stephen Landsem of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department stated in a release Monday. Authorities also identified the 15-year-old girl who died in the fire at 702 6th St. S. as Rylie Efterfield of Hawley. BEMIDJI TOWNSHIP -- No injuries were reported in a mobile home fire Sunday evening in Bemidji Township, officials said. The Bemidji Fire Department responded to the fire in the 1200 block of Little Norway Avenue SE at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. The fire was reported by a passing motorist. When firefighters arrived, the rear portion of the mobile home was fully engulfed by flames, officials said. A total of 17 firefighters used two fire engines and two water tenders to extinguish the fire. All the occupants of the home escaped from the fire and no injuries were reported.
