A 24-year-old Duluth man was arrested late Saturday night after allegedly crashing the SUV he was driving, and then stealing the vehicle of a passerby who had stopped to help. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash happened about 10:30 p.m. in the 4300 block of Martin Road just north of Duluth, where a road construction project is underway. The SUV apparently was traveling westbound when it left the roadway and struck several large, concrete drain pipes stacked alongside the road awaiting installation.
MOORHEAD – National Republicans are targeting Democratic U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson in 2014, and Moorhead residents will soon see GOP bull’s-eyes on his back. The 2014 election is still more than a year away, but starting Tuesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee will run a 30-second spot on Moorhead cable channels calling on northwestern Minnesotans to make Peterson’s 24th year in Washington, D.C., his last. Peterson is one of seven congressional Democrats the NRCC believes may be vulnerable in the 2014 election.

AUDUBON – The Anderson family may have found the secret recipe for family bonding: dill pickles. The eight siblings, originally from Lowry, Minn., pack family fun into hundreds of jars and just one day each summer. This year, the annual tradition began at 7 a.m. in a garage near Audubon. They packed and processed six bushels – 174 quarts and 60 pints of cucumbers.

Updated: 1:41pm (08/16/2013) A tanker truck carrying about 40,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate rolled over as it was turning into Hibbing Taconite on Friday morning. None of the ammonium nitrate spilled; the truck driver suffered minor injuries. The Dyno Nobel truck tipped just after 8 a.m. as the driver was turning from County Highway 5 into the Hibbing Taconite facility, according to a news release from mine owner Cliffs Natural Resources.
Canadian Pacific railroad has furloughed approximately 30 workers in recent months from its operation in Thief River Falls, according to union officials. The job cuts are among roughly 90 furloughs at CP sites across Minnesota that the United Transportation Union has counted since October 2012, part of what the union says are aggressive job cuts that followed leadership changes in the company at that time. “We’re not happy about it,” said P.J.

MAHNOMEN -- A 65-year-old man was declared dead Monday after a single-vehicle accident was reported north of Mahnomen. According to a press release from the Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office: David Janisch, of rural Mahnomen, was pronounced dead after he was found lying outside his vehicle on 240th Avenue about 11 miles north of Mahnomen . A one-vehicle accident was reported at about 10:47 a.m.
