Minnesota was selected as the second most bicycle friendly state in the nation this week. According to a press release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the League of American Bicyclists released the ranking, putting the North Star State in second and Washington in first. States coming behind Minnesota were California, Oregon and Massachusetts. The ranking was based on multiple indicators including: • Infrastructure and funding that provide safe places to bike. • Education and encouragement programs that promote cycling.
ULEN, Minn. — A Hawley, Minn., man died and three other people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash that happened Sunday, Oct. 15, near Ulen. According to Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander, the crash was reported at 11:59 a.m. at the intersection of county roads 7 and 16, about 6 miles east of Ulen. The driver of an SUV, Todd George Mikulecky, 68, of Hawley, was pronounced dead at the scene.
FERGUS FALLS — The family of a missing vulnerable adult from Fergus Falls says their prayers have been answered. Twenty-seven-year old Shaylia Helland's father says she was found at Catholic Chairities St. Paul. Her family brought her home Tuesday night. Police say Helland left her group home last Friday and appeared to be getting rides from truckers at truck stops.
TENNEY, Minn.—A 21-year-old construction worker died after falling 150 feet from the top of an elevator here Thursday afternoon, Oct. 5, the Wilkin County Sheriff's Office reported. The man was working at the Wheaton Dumont Co-op Elevator with two other men on a platform. They were adjusting another platform to connect to the platform that they were on when the man fell, the sheriff's office reported. The accident was reported about 2:45 p.m. Tenney is about 25 miles southeast of Wahpeton-Breckenridge.
Tom Hoge closed with a flurry in the Web.com Tour Finals in Atlantic Beach, Florida Monday and the result netted the Fargo South graduate his PGA Tour card for a fourth season. Hoge birdied the last three holes to finish with a six-under 65 and a tie for 12th in the tournament.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn.—Three people were arrested in connection with the 15-year-old missing girl from Alexandria who was found Tuesday, Sept. 5, 20 miles away in neighboring Grant County. Alexandria Police Chief Rick Wyffels sent out a news release shortly after 8 p.m. stating that the police department believes releasing the identities of these people could jeopardize the investigation into the disappearance of Jasmine Block on Aug. 8. The public is not at risk at this time, Wyffels said. One arrest was made in Grant County, and two others in Pope County, Wyffels said.
ST. PAUL -- A post-summer survey shows an upward trend of Minnesota’s tourism business, the state’s tourism promotion office said. Summer revenue was up for 42 percent of survey respondents and occupancy was up 35 percent, according to Explore Minnesota on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Meanwhile, 30 percent of respondents experienced a decrease in revenue and 31 percent said occupancy was down. The hotel and motel sector reported decreased occupancy due to significant growth of new hotel rooms in the Twin Cities area, the tourism office said in its news release.
FARGO — Law enforcement updated the public Monday, Aug. 28 on Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind, whose body was found Sunday in rural Clay County. Suspects William Hoehn and Brooke Lynn Crews will appear Monday afternoon to face formal charges, Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick said. The couple will appear at 2 p.m. today in Cass County District Court. They will face three charges each: conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping and providing false information to law enforcement, Burdick said.
Fargo - A potentially unthinkable story began to reveal itself Thursday, Aug. 24, when the investigation into the disappearance of a pregnant 22-year-old woman resulted in police finding a healthy infant at a north Fargo apartment building where the woman was last seen. The discovery of the infant, Fargo police said, was followed by the arrest of Brooke Lynn Crews, 38, and William Henry Hoehn, 32, who both lived in the same apartment building as the missing woman, Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind.
ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Supreme Court announced it will offer live streaming video of oral arguments beginning next week, when justices will hear a case the state Legislature filed against Gov. Mark Dayton after a veto of funding. In a press release, the Supreme Court said offering live video of arguments is "an effort to increase public access to the work of the state's highest court." The court will continue to post recorded video of oral arguments. Both live and recorded video can be found online by visiting www.mncourts.gov/SupremeCourt .
