FARGO — Attorneys involved in Alfonso Rodriguez’s final appeal of his death sentence were asked by U.S. Judge Ralph Erickson to streamline the case if possible. “There are a lot of pages, a lot of things said, a lot of issues raised,” Erickson told the attorneys in federal court here during a 13-minute status conference. If there are any issues either side sees as having “less merit than others” and could abandon to concentrate on more significant ones, “it makes my life easier,” he said.
FARGO - A Grand Forks man, who with his siblings is facing extensive drug charges, was sentenced to 10½ years in federal prison this week after he pleaded guilty to conspiring to move methamphetamine and other drugs from Texas into Minnesota and North Dakota. Devin Keplin, 35, is one of several siblings from Grand Forks facing federal drug charges after their arrests this year in drug deals involving a handful of other people, too.
FARMINGTON, Minn. -- A 51-year-old Farmington woman admitted knowing about marijuana found growing on her property, police said, but blamed someone else’s discarded seeds for the presence of the plants in her greenhouse. Dakota County Drug Task Force agents searched Lori Abeln’s property Oct. 16. According to a complaint filed in the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, they found 47 marijuana plants growing in a greenhouse. A Duluth man was sentenced Wednesday to serve more than 10 years in prison for stabbing his former roommate with a sword earlier this year. A jury found 43-year-old Kyle Dean McClain guilty of first-degree assault with great bodily harm and second-degree assault after a three-day trial in October.

ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board on Tuesday fined the Minnesota Democratic Senate campaign $100,000 for violating state campaign rules. Republicans filed a complaint alleging that various Democratic campaigns in 2012 shared photos, but were supposed to be working independently. LITCHFIELD, Minn. — A 62-year-old Kimball woman was killed in a motor vehicle crash about 9 a.m. Tuesday in Meeker County. A Minnesota State Patrol report said Barbara J. Root was driving a 2004 Kia west on state Highway 24 and made a defensive move to avoid an oncoming vehicle, but collided head-on with a third vehicle, a 1995 Chevy pickup driven by Douglas J. Hughes, 50, of Litchfield. Hughes was taken to Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening. The oncoming vehicle was an eastbound 2000 Pontiac driven by Matthew B.
