ST. PAUL -- Gov. Mark Dayton has proposed an additional $19 million in special education funding for next year, as such expenses rise throughout the state. His plan would increase spending by $22 million the following year. Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius said Thursday, April 12, that rising costs limit opportunities to all students, and create constraints on programs. The proposed $19 million increase, she said, would contain growth and provide some relief. “It will directly impact every student in those districts,” Cassellius said.
ST. PAUL —Anglers catching walleyes on Mille Lacs Lake will have to throw them all back again this summer. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on Monday announced its summer 2018 regulations for the big central Minnesota lake that includes catch-and-release fishing all season, and no night fishing from May 14 through the rest of the year. It's the third consecutive summer with no keeping Mille Lacs walleyes as the DNR tries to protect as many of the lake's walleyes as possible to bolster the population back to historic levels.
NAYTAHWAUSH, Minn. — An 18-year-old man wanted in connection with a Minneapolis homicide was arrested in this northwest Minnesota county on Wednesday, April 11, on a felony warrant. The Mahnomen County Sheriff's Office reported Juan Vasquez Jr., no listed address, was arrested early Wednesday morning at a house in Naytahwaush about 20 miles east of Mahnomen.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Two people have been arrested and charged with Third Degree Murder in connection with the death of a 6-year-old boy here, and his sibling has been taken into protective custody. Bobbie Christine Bishop, 40, and Walter Henry Wynhoff, 44, both of Fergus Falls, were being held Tuesday, April 10, in Otter Tail County Jail and both are charged with Third Degree Murder.
Esko needed a second-half comeback to claim a 57-46 win over Breckenridge in Friday's fifth-place game of the Minnesota Class 2A state boys basketball tournament. Esko used the free throw line to fend off the Cowboys after losing seven-footer Adam Trapp to a knee injury in the second half and guard Camden Berger, who fouled out with seven minutes remaining in the game. Esko made 19 of 24 (70 percent) shots from the stripe, 16 coming in the second half.

FARGO – A man was shot late Wednesday night, March 21, after he allegedly brandished a large knife at police officers who responded to a domestic abuse disturbance call at a southside apartment complex, Fargo Police said in a news release. Orlando Estrada, 28, Fargo, was transported to a local hospital for his injuries, police said Thursday, March 22.
Roseau is headed back to the Minnesota state Class AA girls basketball championship game. The Rams posted a come-from-behind 78-66 win over Marantha Christian Academy on Friday night in a semifinal game at Target Center. Roseau, the defending state champion, will play Sauk Centre today at 2 p.m. in the championship game. Sauk Centre, the top seed, downed Norwood-Young America 54-45 in Friday's other semifinal. Roseau trailed in the first half and was down 38-33 at the half. But the Rams pulled away late.
FARGO — Vice President Mike Pence will be in Fargo March 27 to support Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Cramer announced Pence's visit Friday, March 16, in an email. He is challenging incumbent Democrat Heidi Heitkamp in a Senate race drawing national attention and funding. "Mike Pence epitomizes the best qualities of a public servant," Cramer's email said. "He and President Trump have been true friends to North Dakota and strong partners in advancing our state's economy and culture."
Sauk Rapids-Rice ended the Fergus Falls Otters' reign in Minnesota Class 3A, Section 8 boys basketball. Storm junior Cade Milton-Baumgardner had a big second-half scoring surge to help the Storm rally for a 64-59 victory against the Otters in the section title game. Fergus Falls (22-7) was the two-time defending section champion. The Otters had their 10-game winning streak snapped. Sauk Rapids-Rice (21-8) outscored Fergus Falls 37-31 in the second half.
