The Cultural Center announces its new gallery show, Book as Art, which is open now, and seeks old books from the public to join the exhibition, which runs through Dec. 10. Accepting old family books, perhaps in Old World languages, or family Bibles, the Center is seeking beautiful books to share with the public. These could include intricately tooled covers, gilt-edged pages, or unique printing or binding.
ST. PAUL—Talk of a Minnesota special legislative session to deal with soaring individual insurance policy rates continues, even as the 2017 regular session is just six weeks away. Gov. Mark Dayton said on Monday, Nov. 21, that he plans on Tuesday to unveil a new proposal about how to deal with policy costs. He earlier suggested an instant rebate to people buying individual policies who do not qualify for federal subsidies. About 5 percent of Minnesotans buy individual policies.
CROOKSTON, Minn.—An East Grand Forks man died Sunday night, Nov. 20, after the vehicle he was driving struck a deer and rolled in Polk County. According to a report released by the Polk County Sheriff's Office: The crash happened about 6:22 p.m. on Polk County Road 23 north of 150th Street Northwest in Brandt Township. A car driven by Jason K. Johnson, 42, was northbound on the county road when the vehicle struck a deer before going into the ditch and rolling over. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
A 23-year-old man who was scalded to death after falling into a boiling Yellowstone National Park hot spring in June was trying to test the temperature of the bubbling pool for a soak when he slipped in, according to a report on the incident. Colin Nathaniel Scott was seen by his sister, Sable, plunging into the hot spring near Pork Chop Geyser on June 7. His body was never recovered from the the highly acidic, 212 degree water.
WILLMAR, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation on Friday, Nov. 18, has issued a no-travel advisory for parts of southwest Minnesota, where visibility has been reduced to zero.
BISMARCK — A soft lockdown was ordered Monday, Nov. 14, at the North Dakota Capitol after a group of protesters congregated on the building grounds. The North Dakota Highway Patrol said those with key card access could still enter the building and while those inside are allowed to leave if they choose. Protesters opposed to the Dakota Access Pipeline gathered on three sides of the Capitol late Monday morning.
FARGO—The largest, brightest full moon in nearly seven decades will be on display in the coming days, promising Earth-bound sky-watchers a celestial "supermoon" spectacle. The full moon will come nearer to Earth than at any time since 1948, astronomers said. At closest approach, which occurs at 5:23 a.m. on Monday, the moon will pass within 216,486 miles of Earth's surface, about 22,000 miles closer than average. The moon's distance from Earth varies because it is in an egg-shaped, not circular, orbit around the planet.
A 41-year-old man was found Monday, Nov. 7, deceased in the woods after suffering an apparent gunshot wound in central Minnesota. Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reported deputies were called at 5:04 p.m. to a possible hunting accident on property near the intersection of Hawthorne Road and Jewel Road in Belle Prairie Township east of Little Falls. According to the sheriff's office, Terrence Brisk was found deceased by a family member. Brisk was believed to be hunting as he was wearing blaze orange.
