FERGUS FALLS, Minn. - A Perham man was sentenced this week in Otter Tail County District Court to jail time following a felony conviction of engaging in electronic communication relating to sexual conduct with a child. A deputy in Kalispell, Mont., conducted an undercover computer chat investigation and posed as a 13-year-old girl while communicating with John Patrick Flatley, 54, according to court records. Flatley admitted to authorities that in the recent past he had begun to use Internet chat rooms as a method of dealing with his urges for children.

A Moorhead woman was killed Friday afternoon in a head-on crash on Highway 34 in Otter Tail County. Janeen M. Virnala, 60, of Moorhead died in the accident. She was a passenger in 1996 Dodge Intrepid that was eastbound on Highway 34. The car crossed the center line east of County Road 23 and collided with a 2007 Jeep CMP four-door wagon driven by Steven W. Haiby, 47, of Pelican Rapids. He suffered non life-threatening injuries, according to the State Patrol. The crash occurred about 3 p.m.
