ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Transportation remind motorists to be careful of turtles crossing roads over the next several weeks as they move to familiar nesting locations. Allowing turtles to cross the roads is vital to preserving regional populations. “Many turtles and other species are killed on Minnesota roads each year, especially during the nesting season,” said Carol Hall, DNR herpetologist, “In fact, roadway mortality is believed to be a major factor in turtle population declines throughout the United States.”
BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Trial dates have been set for a Baudette woman accused of stealing from a GoFundMe account she set up for three men who died in a boating accident on Lake of the Woods. Retina Reyellen LaValla, 28, was charged in February in Lake of the Woods District Court with two counts of felony theft after the Sheriff's Department said she used some of the donated money to pay for various bills and groceries.
FERGUS FALLS – A homicide investigation is underway here after police found someone dead in a home. Police responded to a call for assistance around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1. Officers said it appears the victim died of homicidal violence. The suspect ran from the scene before being arrested without incident. Names have not been released. The Fergus Falls Police Department and Minnensota BCA are investigating. The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Battle Lake Police Department helped in the case.

A Roseau County deputy sheriff has been accused of “shooting up” a hunting cabin and burning the gun. Joshua McGurran Olson, Roseau, was charged in district court with first-degree damage to property, a felony, and falsely reporting crime, a misdemeanor. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension began investigating the 34-year-old on March 2 after a man reported his hunting cabin in rural Roseau County had been damaged when someone fired numerous .223 caliber rounds into it, according to a complaint.

The Department of Natural Resources has confirmed that zebra mussels were found at the Moorhead pumping station intake on the Red River, Moorhead Public Service announced Tuesday, May 24. The zebra mussels were discovered during routine maintenance on pumping equipment. The discovery of adult zebra mussels comes nearly one year after an adult zebra mussel was found on an intake screen at the Fargo Red River intake. In 2013, MPS completed modifications to the Red River Pumping Station, which included adding an intake screen composed of a zebra mussel repellent alloy.
WADENA, Minn. -- A man is charged with felony drug possession after four pounds of meth with an estimated street value of $200,000 was discovered in a package being delivered to a Wadena home. Wadena County Sheriff Michael Carr received information from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension about a suspicious package that was being mailed from Arizona to a residence in the Wadena. Officers received a search warrant for the package after it was learned the intended recipient was not associated with the residence and found meth inside it.
