An Alexandria, Minn., teen has died after contracting a rare and severe brain infection while swimming in Lake Minnewaska in Pope County, according to a Twin Cities television station report this afternoon. KSTP-TV reported Hunter Boutain, 14, died at 11:21 a.m. Thursday, family members said. Boutain was being treated at University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis. WALKER, Minn. -- A 44-year-old man was given the maximum sentence after he strangled someone in front of a child. Dallas Wayne Smith, Cass Lake, was found guilty of the felony crime of domestic assault by strangulation after a two-day trial in June in Cass County District Court in Walker. The jury convicted Smith of the strangulation charge, along with a misdemeanor domestic assault charge. Judge Jana Austad departed from the standard sentence, instead giving the maximum sentence of three years in prison for this type of offense.

Minnesota's ruffed grouse spring drumming counts were unchanged this year compared to last year, according to a spring survey conducted by the Department of Natural Resources. DNR officials said Monday that grouse hunters should see similar prospects this fall as last, but that conditions during this spring's nesting season — and conditions this summer for newly hatched chicks — also will help determine the population and hunting success. In the northeast survey region, which is the heart of grouse range in Minnesota, counts were 1.3 drums per stop, the same as last year.
