CHANHASSEN, Minn. -- Divers found 10 zebra mussels in Christmas Lake during a follow-up search earlier this week, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said. The mussels were found outside of the area where the DNR had treated the lake last year as part of a series of small, targeted treatments in Minnesota lakes.
The four driving lanes on Highway 10 will open from midday Friday, May 22, until the morning of Tuesday, May 26. Some access points to adjacent frontage roads have been closed or modified. Those changes will remain in place through the weekend. Even though work will stop for the holiday weekend, motorists are asked to drive carefully through the work zone.
WALKER, Minn. - The Cass County (Minn.) Sheriff’s Office has released the names of two half brothers who died of apparent gunshot wounds on the shores of Leech Lake near Walker on May 12. According to a release issued Thursday, investigation into the deaths and preliminary autopsy results show the men died of a murder-suicide scenario. The deceased have been identified as Leo Jordan, 57, and David Smith, 60, both of Walker. Jordan was transported to a Fargo hospital via North Memorial AirCare, where he was later pronounced dead.
ELLENDALE, Minn. -- A southeast Minnesota farmer is recovering after being stuck in corn up to his neck in a grain bin at a farm near Ellendale. Christopher Johnson, 65, was clearing a crust layer from the corn in the bin Wednesday morning when the crust gave way and he sank into the grain. He was able to hang onto a rope hanging in the bin. Family members put plywood inside the bin so Johnson didn’t sink farther down and also shoveled grain away from him, said Freeborn County Sheriff Kurt Freitag.

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. - A former Pennington County social worker has been charged with defrauding the county and trying to steal nearly $1,300 in public funds by taking county vehicles to locations where she never showed up, according to court records. Sally Ann Mumm, 51, of Thief River Falls, was charged with six counts of making false claims to a public body, all felonies, in Minnesota Ninth District Court in Thief River Falls earlier this month.
