A Cass Lake man was sentenced Tuesday in Beltrami County District Court to 12 years in prison for his part in a kidnapping after a drug deal gone wrong. Joseph Harvey Bellanger, 32, was arrested in March after two people reported that Bellanger and three other people took them against their will, detained, beat and terrorized them before leaving them in a secluded location. One victim told deputies the incident stemmed from methamphetamine use. Bellanger was convicted on two counts of felony kidnapping on Sept. 25.

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. -- A 38-year-old Itasca County man was arraigned on one count of second-degree murder Friday for allegedly killing his infant son. Emery Jenkins, of Deer River, was taken into custody Thursday by Itasca County Sheriff’s Office deputies. According to the sheriff’s office, at about 1 p.m. on Oct. 16 deputies responded to a 911 call about a 2½-month-old boy — Jenkins’ son, Joseph — not breathing. Emergency personnel arrived and performed CPR. The child was transported to a hospital in Deer River and then life- flighted to Essentia Health-St.
BEMIDJI - A Cass Lake man has been arrested for allegedly having sex with an 11-year-old girl multiple times. Lance Arnold Kingbird, 46, was arrested Saturday after the girl’s mother reported the crime to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office. The victim told staff at the Family Advocacy Center in Bemidji she has been sexually abused by Kingbird multiple times, including five incidents over the past few weeks. According to court documents, the girl’s mother witnessed one incident where she saw Kingbird on top of her daughter under blankets.

BEMIDJI -- A Cass Lake man was injured in a rollover Thursday night near Walker, Minn. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the accident occurred at about 11 p.m. on State Highway 371 at the Long Bow Trail. Leland Jones, 24, was traveling north on Highway 371 in a 2006 Chrysler minivan when he left the road to the east and rolled. There were no passengers in the vehicle. Jones suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the patrol said, and was transferred to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. Jones was wearing his seat belt. The van was totaled, the patrol said.
RED LAKE, Minn. - A Red Lake woman has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for stabbing a man to death in 2013. Alison Ann Brown, 26, was convicted Oct. 8 in U.S. District Court on a manslaughter charge, a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Brown was sentenced to 78 months in prison for killing Byron Lussier Sr. in the kitchen of his home July 4, 2013. Both Brown and Lussier were members of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians. Lussier lived on the reservation. Brown was indicted Aug. 5, 2013, and pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Feb.
