LONGVILLE, Minn. -- A small airplane was reported on fire after a crash at a northern Minnesota airport Tuesday afternoon. At 12:53 p.m. the Cass County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an airplane crash at the Longville Airport, which is about an hour southeast of Bemidji. The pilot and passenger, from Denison, Iowa, were transported to the Brainerd Hospital, according to a release from the sheriff's office.
FARGO – Police have arrested a man in connection with an early Monday morning hammer assault on another man. Fargo Police Lt. Joel Vettel said Clifford Edward Monteith, 24, Fargo, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault for his part in a fight involving a hammer. He’s accused of hitting the victim in the head with the weapon after a verbal and physical altercation.
FULDA, Minn. -- Two people are dead after a broadside crash Sunday afternoon in southwest Minnesota. Kristen Boynton, 24, of Perry, Ga., was the passenger in a 2005 Chevy Impala driven by Charles Goode, 24, of Lewisville, N.C. Boynton was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene at the intersection of Murray County 3 and U.S. 59, north of Fulda. Also killed was Kerry Schultz, 34, of Worthington. Schultz was a passenger in a 2009 Toyota RAV4 driven by David Schulz, 38, of Worthington.
MOORHEAD – A Moorhead man charged Thursday with assaulting his wife allegedly pretended to be a police officer and choked her when she answered the door. Ruben Gonzales Jr., 25, faces a felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation, a gross misdemeanor domestic assault charge and a misdemeanor charge of fleeing police. Gonzales was separated from his wife for several months, but went to her residence Wednesday to “work on their relationship,” according to the criminal complaint filed in Clay County District Court. Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a fatal one-vehicle crash that occurred early Thursday along Minnesota Highway 89 near the Roseau-Marshall county line. The victim is believed to be a 30-year-old man from Brooklyn Park, Minn., who was operating a truck that left the road at about 5 a.m. at milepost 104 in Roseau County, according to the report. The State Patrol said more information will be released as it becomes available.
FARGO – West Acres mall went into lockdown shortly before noon today after police received a report that an armed man randomly attacked a woman near the J.C. Penney store, according to police. Lt. Joel Vettel said the man approached the woman, a 58-year-old mall employee, as she was walking to her vehicle in the parking lot outside J.C. Penney. The man grabbed hold of her near her vehicle and displayed a handgun in his waistband, Vettel said. The woman struggled with him, and he forced her toward her vehicle.
A former Cass Lake-Bena School Board member was sentenced last week to home detention for theft from the school district in 2008. Terri L. Vail, 53, of Cass Lake, was sentenced in Cass County District Court to 30 days of home detention with electronic monitoring for one count of felony theft by false representation. Vail also has been placed on three years of supervised probation. Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie said if Vail completes probation, the charge will revert to a misdemeanor on her record. Vail previously agreed to pay a minimum restitution of $6,650.
ST. PAUL - A 31-year-old St. Paul woman beat another woman with a small baseball bat late Thursday after the two had sparred on Facebook without having met, charges said. Ramsey County prosecutors charged Bridget Leannamarie Olson with second-degree assault for her alleged attack on the victim, who was identified by the initials K.S.
DULUTH -- Bail was set at $10,000 for a man accused of stabbing a University of Minnesota Duluth football player last month. Xavier Devon Davis, 23, was arraigned Monday in State District Court in Duluth on a felony charge of second-degree assault. Davis is accused of stabbing UMD senior running back Austin Sikorski on Aug. 2. He was arrested without incident by Duluth police Friday after an arrest warrant was issued. Police said several witnesses reported seeing Davis and Sikorski engage in a physical confrontation outside the Flame Nightclub in downtown Duluth.
ST. PAUL -- Minnesota's wet early summer should produce a colorful fall leaf display, but experts warn that it could come and go quicker than usual. “We’re anticipating a beautiful fall color display,” said Patricia Arndt of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division. “It will move across the state quickly, though, so we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy it while it lasts."
