FARGO – West Acres mall went into lockdown shortly before noon today after police received a report that an armed man randomly attacked a woman near the J.C. Penney store, according to police. Lt. Joel Vettel said the man approached the woman, a 58-year-old mall employee, as she was walking to her vehicle in the parking lot outside J.C. Penney. The man grabbed hold of her near her vehicle and displayed a handgun in his waistband, Vettel said. The woman struggled with him, and he forced her toward her vehicle.
A former Cass Lake-Bena School Board member was sentenced last week to home detention for theft from the school district in 2008. Terri L. Vail, 53, of Cass Lake, was sentenced in Cass County District Court to 30 days of home detention with electronic monitoring for one count of felony theft by false representation. Vail also has been placed on three years of supervised probation. Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie said if Vail completes probation, the charge will revert to a misdemeanor on her record. Vail previously agreed to pay a minimum restitution of $6,650.
ST. PAUL - A 31-year-old St. Paul woman beat another woman with a small baseball bat late Thursday after the two had sparred on Facebook without having met, charges said. Ramsey County prosecutors charged Bridget Leannamarie Olson with second-degree assault for her alleged attack on the victim, who was identified by the initials K.S.
DULUTH -- Bail was set at $10,000 for a man accused of stabbing a University of Minnesota Duluth football player last month. Xavier Devon Davis, 23, was arraigned Monday in State District Court in Duluth on a felony charge of second-degree assault. Davis is accused of stabbing UMD senior running back Austin Sikorski on Aug. 2. He was arrested without incident by Duluth police Friday after an arrest warrant was issued. Police said several witnesses reported seeing Davis and Sikorski engage in a physical confrontation outside the Flame Nightclub in downtown Duluth.

PAUL -- Minnesota's wet early summer should produce a colorful fall leaf display, but experts warn that it could come and go quicker than usual. “We’re anticipating a beautiful fall color display,” said Patricia Arndt of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division. “It will move across the state quickly, though, so we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy it while it lasts." A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition Sunday after an ATV crash near Warroad, Minn. At about 3:30 p.m., the Roseau County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident southwest of Warroad, according to a news release. The Warroad Ambulance transported the injured boy, whose identity was not disclosed, to Lifecare Medical Center in Roseau, Minn.
MOORHEAD, Minn. – A Glyndon woman who was arrested for driving drunk with Jell-O shots in her pockets was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison with credit for three months and five days already served. Cathy Sanchez, 29, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Cass County District Court to one felony count of driving while intoxicated. Court documents say Sanchez was pulled over by Glyndon police after she was seen swerving on Highway 10 about 2 a.m.
A 26-year-old Hibbing man has been charged with second-degree murder in the 2012 death of his former girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter. Law enforcement officials announced Friday that a break in the case over the summer led to the arrest of Russell Shannon Johnson, who is accused of causing the death of Caroline Shenze Marie Medicine-Chavez in March 2012. According to the St. Louis County Attorney's Office: Virginia police officers were called to a residence on March 21, 2012, on a report of an unresponsive 2-year-old girl.

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – A woman who triggered a police standoff after reporting a man threatening her with a gun in her home may have been hallucinating, a Fergus Falls police said Thursday. Witnesses who spoke with the woman before the standoff told police she “was experiencing auditory and visual hallucinations,” police said. The woman called police about 11:50 a.m. Wednesday claiming someone assaulted her child and a man was in her home with a gun.
