BRAINERD, Minn. -- Two central Minnesota lakes have been designated as infested with zebra mussels, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reported. Adult zebra mussels were found in Gilbert and North Long lakes near Brainerd in Crow Wing County. The initial discovery was reported by the parents of two boys who retrieved a plastic container with attached zebra mussels while snorkeling in Gilbert Lake. A few days later, children swimming in North Long Lake found zebra mussels, and their parents reported the discovery, the DNR said.
ST.PAUL - The route for the controversial Sandpiper oil pipeline will be discussed today at a hearing before the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. The Enbridge pipeline project would transport oil from near Tioga in western North Dakota more than 600 miles to an Enbridge terminal in Superior, Wis. The project has been met with some resistance in northern Minnesota by groups such as Honor the Earth and Friends of the Headwaters. BEMIDJI, Minn. - A Redby man was sentenced Tuesday in Beltrami County Court to 7½ years in prison for stabbing a man in May. Orland James Spears, 23, received 69 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud for first-degree burglary, with credit for 96 days served. Spears also was sentenced consecutively to 21 months in prison for second-degree assault. Spears pleaded guilty in June to stabbing the man at the man’s Beltrami County home.

A Denver man who allegedly ran over a 21-year-old Greenwood woman Saturday evening when she fell off the boat he was driving on Whitefish Lake faces criminal charges. Thomas Hurlbut Ryan, 24, was charged Tuesday in Crow Wing District Court with two felony counts of criminal vehicular operation causing great bodily harm while under the influence and two misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated. The judge set bond at $50,000 without conditions and $25,000 with conditions.

DULUTH -- A Duluth man was arrested Wednesday on charges that he suffocated his 14-month-old daughter this month in an attempt to get her to stop crying at bedtime while he smoked marijuana. Christopher Dennis Peterson, 29, faces an unintentional second-degree murder charge in State District Court in Duluth. He is in custody at the St. Louis County Jail, and will be arraigned today in district court in Duluth.
BEMIDJI, Minn. - A man who led authorities on a high-speed chase that ended in his death Monday has been identified as Jared Robert Nash, 28, of Bemidji. The Ramsey County medical examiner identified Nash, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a release from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Nash was alone in the vehicle, authorities said. The BCA said law enforcement had been trying to locate Nash because of another pursuit Friday as officers tried to pull him over for driving after cancellation of his license.
GARRISON, Minn. -- A Little Falls, Minn., man died Saturday after a crash near Garrison, the Minnesota State Patrol reported. According to the report, Todd Dickover, 55, was driving at 1:12 p.m. on Highway 18 when he went off the road on the east side of the ditch, went back onto the highway, crossed the road onto Highway 169 and rolled into a pond, landing on the roof. The Aitkin County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene of the crash.
