MORRIS, Minn. – Criminal sexual conduct charges filed against the Morris Area High School principal were dismissed Tuesday. Stevens County Attorney Aaron Jordan filed paperwork to drop the charges against Craig Peterson after evidence collected within the last month made it clear there is no longer sufficient evidence to proceed with the case.
FARGO – An emotional Gene Taylor started saying his goodbyes Monday morning at the Fargodome. BEMIDJI, Minn. - A teacher at Voyageurs Expeditionary School in Bemidji has pleaded not guilty to having sex with one of his students. Paul Joseph Johnson, 48, of Backus, is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl. Johnson taught math at the school for five years. He was placed on unpaid leave after the charges were brought against him in January.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A 89-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman died in a head-on collision south of Bemidji on Tuesday. The Minnesota State Patrol reported that the man was driving south on U.S. Highway 71 about nine miles south of Bemidji when their car was struck by a northbound vehicle. The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. No information on the condition of the driver of the northbound vehicle had been released Tuesday evening. Names of the victims also were not released.
BRAINERD, Minn. -- A 30-year-old Brainerd man was killed Monday after the motorcycle he was driving crashed with a Chevrolet Blazer in west Brainerd. John D. Helstrom was traveling east on Highway 210, also known as Washington Street, in Brainerd about 2:39 p.m. when it collided with the Blazer, driven by David J. Dale, 56, of Hillman, as the Blazer made a left turn, the Minnesota State Patrol said. Helstrom was flown to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where he died. Helstrom was not wearing a helmet.
ST. PAUL -- An appeal has been filed in the case of a Little Falls man convicted of first-degree murder for killing two teenagers after they entered his home, a TV station reported. KARE 11 in Minneapolis reported that the defense attorney for Byron Smith said the appeal documents were filed Wednesday in Minnesota’s Supreme Court. Steve Meshbesher said he felt the Morrison County judge overseeing the case made several mistakes and that Smith was not granted a fair trial.
PAYNESVILLE, Minn. — The State Patrol says the driver of a tractor-trailer that illegally passed a school bus on the right last week in west-central Minnesota has contacted the law enforcement agency. The information was released via Twitter and Facebook. No further information was released.

CASS LAKE, Minn. -- A wildfire that consumed more than 75 acres Wednesday in Cass County is believed to be arson, and a boy found near the scene was taken into custody, the Cass County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday. The investigation is continuing with the cooperation of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ fire investigation teams, a Cass County release said. The fire was reported about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Pike Bay Township, a mile southwest of Cass Lake.
