HERMANTOWN, Minn. — It was bedtime for Rudy Hummel. He pulled on three pairs of pants and four shirts. He slipped into a pair of boots. He walked out into the starry December night and headed for his snow house. The temperature was 8 degrees. For Hummel, 17, this would be night 193 in a row sleeping outdoors. He started June 7, sleeping on an elevated platform in a copse of balsam fir in his backyard.

H1N1, the nasty flu bug that gave us the pandemic of 2009, is back, the government’s lead health agency says. A Minnesota infectious disease specialist agrees, but she says it’s too early to tell how big of a factor it will be in the current influenza season. “While we are seeing proportionately more cases of H1N1 so far this year, I think it’s way too early to say that that’s going to be the predominant strain,” said Jennifer Heath, immunization outreach nurse specialist for the Minnesota Department of Health.
DULUTH -- A 52-year-old Duluth man was arrested Thursday after an alleged burglary and a car and foot chase that led authorities to the 148th Fighter Wing Air National Guard airfield. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said authorities were en route to a residence where a burglary was reported shortly before 5 p.m.
HIBBING, Minn. – A Chisholm man who admitted recording an underage girl changing clothes and posting images and video on a pornographic website will serve at least eight months in prison. Derrick Allen Mart, 24, also will be on probation for seven years, and any violations of his release could result in him being sent to prison for a full term of 2½ years. Mart pleaded guilty Oct.
MONTEVIDEO, Minn. -- Montevideo police are investigating what they are calling the suspicious death of a 64-year-old man. Thomas Dickson’s body was discovered around 10:15 p.m. Monday in his apartment. Montevideo Police Chief Adam Christopher said the investigation is continuing to take baby steps forward, but that police were not at a point where they could release information on the cause or nature of the death.
MORRIS – Morris Area High School Principal Craig Peterson has been charged with four felony counts of criminal sexual conduct after allegedly assaulting an acquaintance at his home in Morris. Peterson, 36, has been charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree and and two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree. Peterson made his first appearance in Stevens County District Court on Thursday. According to the complaint, the victim, age 30, arranged to meet Peterson at the American Legion in Morris on Saturday, Dec. 21 at about 9 p.m.
