Think this has been the weirdest spring weather in memory?
The Becker County Auditor-Treasurer's Office has been hearing some complaints from residents in the Frazee-Vergas School District about higher-than-expected property tax increases from the school operating referendum passed in November. "Originally, when tax statements went out, people were upset," said Becker County Auditor-Treasurer Ryan Tangen.
In an effort to make clear to the public the state's position on remodeling a school versus building new, the Lake Park -Audubon School Board will play host to a key decision-maker with the Minnesota Department of Education. John Ryberg will be at the high school theater in Lake Park at 6 p.m.
The Becker County area got about 5 inches of wet, heavy snow Thursday night and Friday morning as another spring snowstorm moved across the region. A lot of cars have gone off roadways in the county, largely because of driver inattention, said Sheriff Tim Gordon. "There have been no injury accident as of yet this morning," he said about 9:30 a.m. today.
Christmas came early over the weekend -- at least for kids enjoying a day off from school today.
The Becker County Sheriff's Department reported lots of activity, including cars in the ditch and fender-benders on Sunday afternoon, according to a dispatcher, who was too busy to talk to a reporter. The Becker County area can expect from six inches to a foot of snow today, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a no-travel advisory for much of north-central and Northwest Minnesota, including Becker, Mahnomen, Otter Tail and Hubbard counties. St. Mary's Regional Health Center and Innovis Health (formerly Dakota Clinic) of Detroit Lakes, have formed an affiliation and adopted a new name, St. Mary's Innovis Health. "This affiliation of our two organizations is a very positive step in positioning us for the future, and is an outcome of the January 1 affiliation of the entire Innovis Health organization with St. Mary's parent organization, Essentia Health," says Tom Thompson, chief executive officer. Employees at St. Mary's and the former Dakota clinic are upbeat about the future, said Abigail K.
Faced with increased need and a drop in donations, the community stepped up and made this year a record-breaker for food and cash donations to the Becker County Food Pantry. The food pantry received 77,602 pounds of food and dollars -- they are considered equal for the food pantry's purposes --following a big donation blitz in March. Last year at this time the food pantry had collected 60,509 pounds of food and dollars. "The previous high we had was 68,453 pounds or dollars in 2005, said Food Pantry Director Jack Berenz. White Earth Chairwoman Erma Vizenor made history Tuesday evening -- she was re-elected to another four-year term in the primary election, winning 66 percent of the vote in the seven-candidate race. Former Tribal Council member Tony Wadena of Naytahwaush came in second with 13 percent of the vote. Because Vizenor won more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary (the first White Earth candidate to do so) she was re-elected Tuesday, and the chairperson's race will not be on the general election ballot June 10. The White Earth primary election is Tuesday, April 1, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Community members can keep track of the results Tuesday evening at the Golden Eagle Bingo Hall in Mahnomen.
