OSAGE -- A school bus-pickup truck collision near Osage Wednesday afternoon left the pickup driver injured. No one on the Park Rapids School District bus was injured in the collision, which occurred on an icy 90-degree corner on Washington Avenue, a township road about a mile northwest of Osage, according to Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon. The driver of the Ford pickup, Mahlon Edgar Edmonson, 59, of Osage was taken to St. Joseph's hospital in Park Rapids for treatment.

AUDUBON -- Teachers in Lake Park-Audubon will see a two-year pay increase of 2.9 percent under a contract ratified recently by the School Board and the teachers' union. The school board and the Lake Park Audubon Education Association completed their negotiations earlier this month. District costs for salary, salary benefits, and health insurance will increase by 1.88 percent for Year 1 and the Year 2 increase will be 2.01 percent.

A late-night fire in Ogema on Tuesday killed a pet dog and destroyed a shop/storage building. The fire at 425 Kolb Street was apparently caused by a wood stove, and the dog -- a Rottweiler -- was kenneled near the stove for warmth, according to Ogema Fire Chief Joe McArthur. The building, a 1940s-era structure that McArthur said looked like an old garage, was one of several on the grounds.
A Naytahwaush man is lucky to be alive after he was attacked by a large dog early on New Year's Day. Randy Wadena, 24, had to have 11 stitches in his neck to close a wound that narrowly missed his jugular vein, said his grandmother, Karen Wadena of Naytahwaush. Randy also suffered numerous bites to his arms and legs, after young men in a nearby house sent the dog out to attack him, she said. Mahomen County Sheriff Doug Krier said the case is under investigation, so he could not provide details.

Becker County Deputy Tim Haverkamp, 43, of rural Detroit Lakes has been charged with two gross misdemeanor hunting offenses -- transporting illegal big game and taking or possessing big game out of season. The charges follow a Department of Natural Resources investigation that was launched in October of 2006. It began on Oct. 14, when conservation officer Al Peterson was called out to a residence southeast of Ponsford, close to Highway 225, where a headless white tail buck was found. The large buck had a bullet hole in its neck. It was not tagged with a license of any kind.
