Though you might not know it by looking at the long police report, the Independence Day weekend in Detroit Lakes was actually a little quieter than usual. The band Night Storm of Menomonie, Wis., canceled its show on Friday evening at the Pavilion because there weren't enough people there. Those who showed up Friday were given armbands for free admittance to Saturday's dance, said band spokesman Mike Checkalski. Saturday's event went well and the band will likely be back next year, he added. The Detroit Lakes city parks staff kept busy over the holiday weekend, said public works direct
School officials in Minnesota no longer have to worry that successful levy referendums will later be overturned by voters. In a case based largely on the Frazee-Vergas School District, the Legislature this year removed the option of so-called reverse referendums from state law. The law previously provided for a new operating levy referendum vote with a petition signed by just 15 percent of registered voters. School district supporters, including the Minnesota Association of School Districts, had hoped to convince the Legislature to raise that voter threshold to 30 percent, said Greg Abbo
Police officers in Detroit Lakes know better than to expect to spend a leisurely Independence Day holiday with their families. With Detroit Lakes a destination town for the Fourth of July weekend, they know they'll be working long hours to keep order -- and this year is no exception. "We'll have a high staffing level this weekend," said Detroit Lakes Police Chief Kel Keena.
A Becker County jury has acquitted a former Lake Park-Audubon teacher accused of felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct Jared Lee Sanborn, 26, of P.O.
Trial is underway in Becker County District Court for a former Lake Park-Audubon teacher charged with felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly having intercourse with a 15-year-old girl. The charge technically involves a victim age 13-15 and a perpetrator at least two years older. Jared Lee Sanborn, 26, of P.O. Box 122, Lake Park, appeared in Becker County District Court Tuesday, where attorneys completed jury selection and held opening arguments.
A trial has been set for Sept.
If Gov. Tim Pawlenty proceeds with his unilateral budget cuts next month, area counties will feel the pinch: Becker County will lose $222,000 in state revenue this year and $451,000 next year. Otter Tail County will lose $355,000 this year and $721,000 next year. Hubbard will lose $137,000 this year and $279,000 next year. Mahnomen County is one of five exempt from cuts because its population is under 5,000.
The Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities nearly doubled the amount of money it spent lobbying the Legislature last year -- from about $600,000 to about $1 million. It was a bold gamble, and paid off handsomely in preserving Local Government Aid to cities -- or would have, if not for Gov.
If this works, members of the Lake Park-Audubon School Board will want to give President Obama a big fat kiss on the cheek for making federal stimulus money available. The plan is for LP-A to tap into the new federal money to help build a new high school and new/renovated elementary school. If its two grant applications are approved by the state Department of Education, the district will save nearly $12 million in interest payments over the life of school-construction bonds. District voters still have to approve the bonds needed for the $20.3 million project, but district officials are
It's the most exciting news since you first learned to use the big toilet by yourself -- SJE-Rhombus has a new treatment system that could be the next great thing for the health of Minnesota lakes. The compact system takes toilet water and turns it into water nearly clean enough to drink. "This is state-of-the art -- this is one of the cleanest small systems in the United States," said Jim Lockrem, technical director of SJ Rhombus' environmental group. It is the first flat sheet ceramic MBR treatment plant in the United States. "Worldwide, it's the highest level of treatment availab
