Friends and family describe murder victim Chad James Swedberg, 33, as a good-natured jack-of-all-trades who almost always had a smile for a friend and loved the outdoors with all his heart. But no one seems to have any idea why he died Friday morning, shot while processing maple syrup alone in the woods behind his home on Little White Earth Lake Road. "We're treating it as a homicide, using all the investigative techniques you do with a homicide," said Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon.
The moratorium/ was just a tease/ commissioners said "no"/ to a billboard freeze (with apologies to Burma-Shave) In a close shave for outdoor advertising companies, the Becker County Board on Tuesday decided against imposing a one-year moratorium on new permits for advertising billboards. The moratorium would not have applied to business signs. The board opted instead to form a committee to look at the county's current billboard zoning laws.
There's not a lot for "profoundly retarded" people to do these days, but that's going to change by the end of summer, at least in Detroit Lakes. There are 19 such clients at the Becker County Developmental Achievement Center in Detroit Lakes. With IQs of 19 or less, they generally can't walk, talk, feed themselves or go to the bathroom without help. They make up more than a fourth of the 72 clients who come to the DAC daily to learn work and living skills. (In 20-point IQ increments, the other categories of retardation are severe, moderate and mild). And they will benefit from a 4,1
The cost of electricity in Detroit Lakes is headed up -- perhaps by 10 percent next year for residential customers -- due to a weather-related double whammy that has hit the city's energy suppliers. "A big ice storm the first of the year came through Nebraska and that region, and literally took out all of our transmission lines that bring us our service out of the Laramie River Station (a coal-fired power plant in Wheatland, Wyo.)," said Detroit Lakes Utilities Superintendent Curt Punt. Detroit Lakes gets 60 percent of its power from there, and with the power lines down, it had to purchase
He may be the last Detroit Lakes police captain. Paul Goecke retired on Friday, March 30, and the police force will essentially replace him with two sergeants, for a total of three sergeants. Goecke, 55, has been on the force since 1979.
For a lot of area veterans, it may be the most important strip of pavement since they traveled Highway 1 in Vietnam. Or maybe the airport road into Baghdad.
Becker County is considering following the lead of Detroit Lakes and declaring a one-year moratorium on new advertising billboards. Business signs would not be affected. The Detroit Lakes City Council has already heard the first of two readings required to pass the moratorium. And the city council has directed city staff not to grant any new billboard permits until it makes a final decision on the moratorium, according to three people who came to the county board meeting Tuesday to push for the moratorium -- Glenn Gifford, Sharon Josephson and Del Bergseth. "We wanted to approach the c
It's a long way from Hollywood to Detroit Lakes, and even further from war-torn Yugoslavia to the Red River Valley, but downtown Detroit Lakes will soon play a role in an independent film -- called "Buick Rivera" -- about the aftermath of war in that country. Despite the drizzle last Sunday, a cameraman, with his camera hooded for protection, perched on a corner of the roof of the Main Street Restaurant building, shooting a "beauty shot" for the film. Young people in trench coats were on the street assisting in traffic control for the shot. The script for the movie was one of a dozen or
All-day, every-day kindergarten will be offered free by the Lake Park-Audubon School District when school starts this fall. But parents can still opt for half-time kindergarten if they so desire. The LP-A School Board voted 4-2 Monday, with one member absent, to offer free full-time kindergarten to those who want it. Dale Binde, Vicky Grondahl, Rick Olson and Jeff Swetland voted for it and Rick Ellsworth and Mike McIntire voted against it. Lori Bartunek was absent. The district already offers all-day, every-day kindergarten.
A Becker County deputy faces three misdemeanor charges for alleged illegal hunting. Tim Haverkamp was charged in Becker County District Court Tuesday with using artificial light to locate animals; using a hunting license issued to another person; and hunting deer without a license. He was also charged initially with obstructing the legal process, but that charge was crossed off the complaint.
