After visiting Fair Hills Resort for a Bible camp when she was young, Elaine Anderson was more than happy to return a few years later to work as a waitress. That was in 1939. Back then, she said, things were different. The tables were covered with white linens and the trays of food were prepared for fancy presentation. Everything, at least to her, seemed fancy. “But maybe that’s because we had nothing,” she said. Anderson, now 94, was back at Fair Hills last week – as a visitor this time. This wasn’t her first time back since working there either.
Interested in a little acting experience? A film company is coming to Detroit Lakes and looking for a few extras. Midwest Christian Filmmakers Academy will be filming a mock wedding at Pens & Needles/The Meadows on Lind near Detroit Lakes and need more extras for the film. Eight years ago, Dean Rogers got a new lease on life. Literally. After having a heart attack and going in for a procedure that wound up injuring his kidney, Rogers was put on dialysis and the transplant list. After a year on the list, in October of 2007, there was a donor. “The call came through,” he said. “Everything worked out and it was a perfect match,” his wife, Kathy, said. Since then, the Detroit Lakes couple has been working to bring awareness to the importance of organ donation. Each year they take part in the Fargo Kidney Walk for the National Kidney Foundation.

Lake residents filled the commissioner’s room Tuesday morning during the regular meeting to speak in favor of opening the Dunton Locks tram. The mechanical boat tram transports boats between Muskrat Lake and Lake Sallie, tying Detroit Lake together with Shoreham.

Exercise. Bonding time. Fun. And most of all, it’s for a good cause. Those are the reasons Dave Peterson says he’s participating in his seventh Habitat 500 bike ride, July 12-18. His daughter, Angela, will be joining him this year. “Part is exercise, part is fun, but a big part is it raises money for a good cause,” he said. The 500-mile bike ride begins in Owatonna and ends six days and 500 miles later back in the same city.
After nearly 70 years together, George and Lillian Maruska still enjoy eating meals together, sharing stories about their family and spending time together each day. On July 24, the Detroit Lakes couple will celebrate 70 years of marriage. And from that marriage, they have produced eight children, 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Both agree they are lucky to have found each other all those years ago. In the beginning
