While some say a possible solar-wind hybrid project near Frazee would benefit the city and its residents, others say it would annoy homeowners and kill off wildlife in the area...
One small, random act of kindness can sure leave a massive, focused impression on someone. Case in point: On Friday, I was walking through Walmart, picking up a couple grocery...
Several years ago, when flowering rush infiltrated Detroit Lake, aquatic invasive species became a common term used in the area. Not that it hadn’t been used in the past, but this took it to a new level. Over the last few years, the Detroit Lakes, Becker County, Becker Soil and Water Conservation District, DNR and Pelican River Watershed District worked harder than ever to control and/or eliminate flowering rush, zebra mussels and more invasives threatening the local waters.
White Earth is attempting to bring a little culture and education to both Native Americans and anyone traveling county roads in Becker County. White Earth Cultural Coordinator Merlin Deegan said...
Like anyone interested in travel, Kayla Bekkerus found the ultimate playground for sightseeing – Europe. She spent four months (August-November) traveling from Norway to Poland, Germany to France, Amsterdam to Italy and more. When she left home, Bekkerus – who is from Detroit Lakes but now lives in Duluth while attending college – didn’t have a plan. She made no plans of where she would be or when, and for most of the trip, she had no steady traveling companion. A friend did fly over to travel with her for a while.

Matthew Davis and his fellow Izaak Walton League members are concerned about water quality, agriculture, the two coinciding and fairly sharing both sides of the issue. They are wrapping all that into three meetings for the public to attend, and the first one is Jan. 11. The Prairie Woods Chapter of the Izaak Walton League is helping to educate people on both sides of the water quality versus agriculture issue.
Becker County is making plans for a new jail, or rather an upgrade and addition to the existing jail. This is no new issue to the county, though. From the beginning of Detroit (now Detroit Lakes), the county has worked to improve upon its jails, though it seems to be a struggle each time – and today is no exception. Becker County was established in 1858, but judicial organization didn’t happen until 1871. In 1872, the county board resolved to build a jail, but until the issue of county seat was resolved, the first jail wasn’t built until 1884.
From travel to finances to fitness, the New Year is the new time to set goals - and stick to them.
The second graders at Roosevelt Elementary School in Detroit Lakes are getting an early lesson in production and consumer relations. This month, the young students visited SJE Rhombus and Becker Pet & Garden as part of their social studies curriculum. They even produced their own birdseed containers to be sold at Becker Pet & Garden.
