When we take something at face value, we accept what we’re shown and believe that’s what it is because that’s what we see. Then we throw relativity into the mix, and face value becomes different for every person and how they see that face value. Through relativity, the face value of something may be different for Jane than it is for Joe because they see it differently.
Cut a hole in the ice in the dead of winter and jump through it into freezing cold water. To most, it doesn’t sound like fun, but to those willing to do it, the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes thanks them. For 16 years, the Polar Fest Plunge has been not only the largest fundraiser for the youth organization, but also the anchor for Polar Fest, Detroit Lakes’ largest winter celebration.
Back in 2007, the Detroit Lakes Park Board reviewed its strategy and the top goals it wanted to accomplish. The members drew up a comprehensive park and trail plan, and then held meetings to hash out the details and set some goals. One of those goals became Peoples Park, which opened to ice skating and hockey in 2010. Though the park already existed, it wasn’t really being used for much. Several blocks away though, the old Lincoln skating rink had seen its better days. There were no bathrooms, wood heat and not such great ice.
Many resorts suffer – some even close their doors – over the winter months because visitors would rather stay where it’s warm. But Maplelag and Rainbow resorts near Detroit Lakes tend to be known for having some pretty full winters, too. Both resorts have cross-country ski trails, ice fishing, snowshoeing and other winter activities for their guests. Unfortunately, this winter Rainbow Resort, located near Waubun, will be closed due to health concerns.

“It’s fun to have the store bursting with Christmas,” Hometown Crafts and Fabrics owner Cindy McCullough said. It’s also good, she said, to have a local store on top of all the Christmas trends each year. And there’s something about this year that has people clamoring for Christmas. Already selling out of certain pieces before deer hunting weekend, McCullough is surprised at how quickly and freely people are shopping this year — which is a good thing. Like every holiday season, new trends are popping up, and McCullough plans to stay on top of them.
The good news for Becker County taxpayers is they shouldn’t see an increase in levy dollars this year. County commissioners voted Tuesday after a bit of discussion on where $200,000...
While a couple Becker County elected officials asked for higher wage increases than the proposed 1 percent, in the end, the commissioners gave them the 1 percent, or the cost...
Holding steady, Frazee-Vergas School District’s levy for 2016 will be in line with the 2015 levy. The 2015 budget and levy was set at $2.091 million, and the 2016 budget and levy was set at $2.089 million Monday evening during the regular board meeting. That’s a decrease of $2,400, or about .12 percent. When taxpayers get their tax statements next year, the numbers will look different from the proposed tax statements sent out a month or two ago.
