Growing up in Detroit Lakes, Chris Allen remembers occasionally getting to go to Godfather's Pizza. "It was a big deal -- I sat right up there on the balcony," he said, pointing up where old woodwork within the historic Graystone building splits the top and bottom level of the pizza shop. Godfather's has been a pepperoni-topped icon since the early 1980s, proving itself a cheesy mainstay of Detroit Lakes throughout the years. But now, Chris Allen (a 1990 DL graduate) is all grown up and is once again hanging around Godfather's. That's because the entrepreneur now owns the place, along
Two people were injured in an accident on Highway 34 and County Road 25, about two miles east of Detroit Lakes Friday afternoon. According to the Minnesota Highway Patrol, 81-year-old Alden Tyge of Detroit Lakes was traveling eastbound on Highway 34 at around 2 p.m.
The local economy is showing signs of strengthening -- that was the message at the Economic Development Summit in Detroit Lakes Thursday. The event, which was held at M State, was a chance for local business and program leaders to gather for networking and to hear about the latest projects happening in the region. Bill Blazer, senior vice president of public affairs and business development for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, told the crowd of nearly 100, that while the economy is still "shaky," it's better than it was last year when it was "uncertain." "The good news for this region

Two final candidates for the Becker County Administrator position now await the verdict of who gets the job after a final interview with the commissioners Wednesday morning. Becker County Auditor-Treasurer Ryan Tangen is in the running, as is Ron Moorse, city administrator for Afton, Minn., which is located east of the Twin Cities and is home to nearly 2,900 people. A third candidate, Robert Bezek, an engineer for FEMA, dropped out of consideration after commissioners denied his request to do the final interview online, via Skype. On Wednesday Tangen and Moorse met separately with the c
Leave your cell phone in the car and put everything metal into the bin -- Becker County has fortified security within its courtrooms. Those wanting access into the courts portion of the courthouse building in Detroit Lakes must now be screened for weapons and electronic devices. While it's business as usual in that part of the courthouse where residents go to get passports, pay taxes, get birth certificates and other county-related business, taking a left from the main entrance to go into the actual court system is different. A metal detector now sits there, as do three part-time screene
Many QVC lovers now have a chance to get up close and personal with some of its clothing items, as Kitty Kelli's Clothing & Accessories opens its doors in Detroit Lakes. If the name sounds familiar, it's because the lady behind the store, Kelli Atchison, had a seasonal Kitty Kelli's in Cormorant for two years and has been a constant at the Shady Hollow Flea Market for seven. "Both of those are seasonal, but much of my clientele has been wanting me to open a year-round location," said Atchison, adding that while she will still be out at the flea market, she will not be re-opening the Cormo
Give what you grow. That might be the motto of Minnesota Food banks, and the food pantries they serve, as they look for leftovers. Harvest to Home is one part of a new initiative called Hunger-Free Minnesota, which is made up of food banks and other service organizations throughout the state striving to reduce hunger. Harvest to Home is designed to convince local farmers to donate their agricultural surplus to food banks. "Apples, potatoes, squash, onions, carrots -- you name it," said Susie Novak, executive director of the North Country Food Bank in Crookston (the food bank that serve
A Detroit Lakes truck driver is in intensive care in California after suffering from a serious stroke following an accident last month. According to family, 61-year-old Jerry Pesicka was driving his big rig on Interstate 5 in Orange County, Calif., on Feb. 6, when he blacked out and ended up on an off-ramp. His semi smashed into an SUV, critically injuring the two young women inside, then hit a BMW and another semi.
It was supposed to be just an afternoon of yardwork for 13-year-old Tyler Nelson, who was hired to do a raking job for a couple he knew on the 1000 block of Rossman Avenue, when it quickly turned bizarre. "I saw this car come through the driveway, drove through the yard and crashed right there," he said, pointing to the front of the house. "I was standing right...
