For 100 years, the Lake Sallie Fish Hatchery at Dunton Locks -- just out side of Detroit Lakes -- has been helping Mother Nature along -- increasing the fish population in area lakes. It has undoubtedly strengthened commerce, business and livelihoods in lakes country since its inception in 1912. That's why DNR officials are hosting a century celebration on Aug.
A public hearing held within a special session of the Detroit Lakes School board Wednesday night led to no decision on the proposed fee for College Now classes at the high school. School administration put the idea on the table as a way to help fund the growing popularity of the college classes, which the district is currently paying roughly 70 percent of. But the concern of some at the meeting is that the proposed $40 per student, per class fee may not add up to any savings if students decide to take free classes through another college.
It seems like the entire city of Detroit Lakes is bracing for the whirlwind that is WE Fest. Love it or hate it, there's no doubt the most popular country music fest in the country certainly has an incredible impact on the town and its people. At least 50,000 people are expected to pass through the Soo Pass over the four-day event, most of them visitors to Detroit Lakes.
It was a scary moment for a few ladies at the Smart Style Hair Salon in the Detroit Lakes Walmart Tuesday afternoon. Tamera Davidson was cutting a client's hair when she says a young man came in and started chatting with her. "He seemed like a nice kid at first, and he said he needed a hair cut," said Davidson.
When Detroit Lakes graduate Monte Becker was in high school, he loved shop class. "In fact, I used to skip some of my other classes just to go there," he laughed. Becker thought working with wood would just be a fun hobby for him. "But it's turned out to be much more than that," he said from the new location for his business, Silver Leaf Luxury Cabinets. Becker, who learned much of his trade from another local cabinet maker, started the business in his rural Frazee garage in 2000, naming it after Silver Leaf township where he lived. "I just really got into it and knew I wanted to do
Authorities are looking for a man who allegedly brandished a gun at the Detroit Lakes Walmart hair salon, Smart Style. Tamera Davidson was cutting a client's hair when she says a young man came in and started chatting with her. "He seemed like a nice kid at first, and he said he needed a hair cut," said Davidson.
The lights are blinking and flashing; the air smells like deep-fried heaven, and local children have crazy looks in their eyes. The county fair is in full swing, and I decided to make it one of my "fun things" for the summer. Thursday afternoon seemed to be the perfect time for me, as the big promo that day was "bring in three food pantry items, get three bracelets for $30" -- a good bargain because typically it doesn't take long for each one of my kids to blow through $30 worth of tickets individually.
Getting college credits while still in high school is all the rage these days, but it's proving to be a bit of a "good problem" for some school districts, including Detroit Lakes. An uptick in "College Now" courses -- classes offered through the combined efforts of the DL High School and Southwest State out of Marshall, has school leaders proposing the idea of implementing a fee to those enrolled students. Right now the school district is footing most of the bill for the "concurrent enrollment" classes, which fulfill both high school and many college requirements, with the state kicking in
There are 328 more helping hands around Becker County this week, as volunteers through Catholic Heart Work Camp are in the area helping those who need it most. Sue Livermore of Detroit Lakes has been taking these types of missions trips with students from Holy Rosary for a few years now, last year going to Montana. "But then I thought, why not have one in Detroit Lakes?" said Livermore, who helped organize the weeklong event. Although some may picture missions trips taking place in areas of deep poverty or extreme need, Livermore says working with Mahube, they were able to track down sev
The Detroit Lakes QWERTY robotics team will be out at the Becker County Fair this week, giving fair-goers an up-close look at their competition robots. The team will not only be manning a booth inside the hockey arena Wednesday through Saturday, but will also be setting up a dunk tank from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The public is invited to drive the team robot, called "The Tank." "People can drive and have the robot shoot basketballs and trigger the dunk tank to dunk whoever is in it," explained the team's advisor, Debbie Janzen.
