PARK RAPIDS, Minn. - A former Hubbard County murder suspect who still faces child pornography charges will contest search warrants used to obtain evidence in the case, his attorney said. Murder charges against Fredrick William Bachman were dismissed in November. But investigators combing through burned evidence discovered child porn on Bachman’s computer, authorities said. He faces seven felony counts of possession of child pornography. Bachman was living at a Beauty Lake home that the owner, James Schwartzbauer, 57, was converting to a religious retreat.
PARK RAPIDS, Minn. -- A 2011 fatal crash on Highway 34 could be heading back to Minnesota’s Court of Appeals on the issue of whether a warrant must be obtained before an officer can take blood from a drunk driver. The case of Dean Roehler was denied post-trial relief last week by Hubbard County District Judge Paul Rasmussen. Roehler was appealing his conviction on 11 charges arising from a head-on crash in 2011 that killed a woman. The state contended Roehler was legally drunk when his car crossed the center lane and hit Patricia Borman’s vehicle head-on. She died at the scene.
PARK RAPIDS, Minn. – Four people were transported to the Park Rapids hospital late Monday afternoon after two vehicles collided head-on at a busy intersection east of Akeley. The crash backed up traffic on Highway 34 as emergency crews and ambulances descended on the scene. An accident reconstruction is underway to determine the cause of why a westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee and a southbound Volkswagon Jetta collided at the intersection of Highway 64 east of Akeley, a T-intersection.
A Nevis student was slightly injured Monday morning when the school bus she was riding on slid off Highway 34 in treacherous conditions. The accident occurred near the intersection of Hubbard County Road 85 in blinding snow around 8 a.m. The 12-year-old apparently hit her head on the seat in front of her when the bus bumped down into the ditch. She was taken by ambulance to St, Joseph’s Area Health Services in Park Rapids as a precaution.

One person has died in a single-vehicle rollover early Monday morning outside of Laporte. The car’s passenger was taken to Sanford Bemidji with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The driver, who was dead at the scene, had to be extricated from the wreckage by the Lakeport Fire Department. The crash, on Highway 2oo east of Laporte, was reported by a passerby shortly before 2 a.m. The vehicle ended up blocking traffic on the highway.
