Both games of Tuesday night’s doubleheader between the Bemidji American Legion baseball team and Detroit Lakes began and ended the same way. Henry Michalicek connected for a pair of lead-off home runs, and Centaur pitchers held the home team to a single run on the scoreboard to sweep the twinbill with scores of 13-1 and 12-1 at Washington Park.
Tucker Hibbert is continuing his efforts to raise money for Make-A-Wish® Foundation of Minnesota by leading a team at the 2018 Walk for Wishes® Twin Cities event. For the third consecutive year, Hibbert is bringing together fans, friends and family to join Team 68 and help grant the wishes of children with critical illnesses.
Detroit Lakes area Pickleball players recently welcomed the Chamber Ambassadors and the DL Street Department to help break ground for the new Pickleball courts in Peoples Park on Tuesday, June 12. After the DLPA fundraised $200,000, the courts are currently under construction by the City of DL Park Board. The six additional new courts will be available for play about mid-August.
The Detroit Lakes 15U baseball team defeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 15-8 in the opener of a doubleheader with the Rebels Monday June 18. The Lakers got strong pitching efforts from Blaine Henderson, Logan Lund, and Dylan Strawsell. A balanced offensive attack was the difference with hits from all 10 Laker hitters led by Lund with two hits, four RBI and two runs scored.
The Detroit Lakes sixth grade boys basketball team captured the championship of the Pacesetter MIT (Minnesota Invitational Tournament) in Maple Grove Saturday, June 16. In the opening game of the tournament the Lakers took an 18-0 lead over Paynesville and never looked back, winning 36-19. DL defeated Pelican Rapids 35-14 in the semifinal round and were victorious over Owatonna 36-25 in the championship game.
A celebration of the retirement of Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Executive Directors John and Mary Erickson will be held Sunday, June 24 from 1-4 p.m., at the Holiday Inn in Detroit Lakes. The ceremony will be in recognition of 18 years of leadership and dedication by the Ericksons.There will be appetizers and a cash bar. The program is scheduled to begin at at 2:30 p.m.
The Detroit Lakes sixth-grade girls basketball team qualified for the Pacesetter Minnesota Youth Basketball State Championships. The sixth-grade girls state tournament will be held June 17 in Maple Grove. The teams are:Plainview-Elgin-Millvillle, Sleepy Eye, Cloquet, Eden Valley-Watkins, Perham, Detroit Lakes, Mountain Iron-Buhl, and Cass Lake-Bena. All teams play three games in one day in an eight-team format.

Registration is available for the Laker Softball Summer Camp for girls ages 9-15. The camp will be held June 20-21 at Snappy Park from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on both days. Cost is $30; a T-Shirt and snack will be provided. Players will work on pitching, base running, hitting, bunting, defensive skills and other fundamentals.
