Parents dropping off or picking up their children at Roosevelt Elementary School on Tuesday may have noticed something a little different.
As manager Reuben Kincaid once was to the fictional Partridge Family, so George Paul was to the real-life rock-and-roll band, The Unbelievable Uglies. "I felt they should have somebody to help them -- they needed guidance," says Paul, a longtime Detroit Lakes resident. And George, as the father of Greg Paul -- one of the band's founding members -- fit the bill. For four years during the band's 1960s heyday, he served as manager, mentor, and father figure to the five teenagers: Greg Paul, Bob Eveslage, Mike Shannon, Dave Hoffman and Dave Prentice.
Though the idea of a courthouse parking ramp is "still an option," according to Becker County Administrator Brian Berg, the county board approved a purchase agreement Tuesday that makes it an unlikely one. While the purchase won't become final until certain conditions are met, the board approved an agreement Tuesday to purchase the property currently occupied by the Berean Baptist Church and one adjacent home to the south, for a price of $553,717 with $20,000 earnest money. To some people, 13 is an unlucky number. But for participants in this summer's "Beardsley Run 4 Fun" youth program at the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center, 13 means success. According to DLCCC program director Brent Wolf, the kids have been asked, over the course of the summer, to read 13 books, run 13 miles, and complete 13 good deeds.

The amendments were recommended for approval at an Aug.
No Becker County law enforcement officers were injured in the performance of their duties at the 10,000 Lakes Festival or WE Fest this summer, according to Sheriff Tim Gordon. Gordon was at Tuesday's meeting of the Becker County Board of Commissioners to give an overview of the two summer festivals -- which take place every summer south of Detroit Lakes at the Soo Pass Ranch -- from a law enforcement perspective. Though both festivals are held at the same venue, and take place just a few weeks apart (10KLF is in mid-July, while WE Fest is held the first weekend in August), comparing the tw

When the waves of Detroit Lake were stirred up by high winds last Saturday, organizers of the fourth annual Young Life Triathlon might have been forgiven for a moment of doubt. The event was moved into Detroit Lakes this year, after three years at Audubon's Castaway Club.
For most of us, the idea of dying is a frightening one. And that fear can often become overwhelming to one who knows that their days left on earth are limited to just a few. But at Emmanuel Community, the term "good death" is not an oxymoron.
When Leona Saatoff was chosen as the grand marshal of the Waubun Centennial Parade earlier this summer, it was a big surprise. "Her kids just came and picked her up that day," says Judy Block, resident manager at Lincoln Park Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes, where Saatoff has been a resident for the past year. When asked about the experience, Saatoff is clearly a little uncomfortable with the attention. "I was just a hard working teacher," she says.
