Traditionally, many young adults are taught to graduate high school, get a college degree, and go work for a large corporation. Minnesota State Community & Technical College-Detroit Lakes is taking a slightly different approach. The school is in the process of implementing an entrepreneurship program that can help students find their strengths, develop their talents, and create a desire to achieve something for themselves as well as for others.
Where have all the pumpkins gone? With another Halloween holiday now upon us, many local residents have noticed the absence of the large, round orange vegetables from lawns and doorsteps this year. Oh, that's not to say there aren't more than a few "Funkins" -- artificial, carvable foam pumpkins -- to be found here and there.

The 25th Anniversary WE Fest celebration, "Heaven in 2007," is going to be a tough act to follow -- but festival organizers are already "Feelin' Great about 2008," as they confirmed this week that Rascal Flatts will join Kenny Chesney as headliners for the 26th annual event. "It's great to have Rascal Flatts back, especially now that they have the No. 1 country album on the Billboard charts," said Jeff Krueger, president and CEO of Festivals And Concert Events (FACE), Inc., which operates WE Fest.
After pinpointing him as the front-runner for the job at the last meeting of the Becker County Board, it wasn't a surprise when the commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Mike Fritz as Becker County Attorney. Fritz, who has served as an assistant county attorney for the past 14 years -- under the supervision of current County Attorney Joe Evans -- will take the reins on Nov. 16, the same day that Evans' resignation becomes final. (As it happens, that date will also be Fritz's birthday.) Evans was appointed to the Seventh District Court bench earlier this month, by Gov.

The Detroit Lakes native has been singing professionally since the age of 15.
"Tale as old as time, true as it can be..." When the Walt Disney Company released its timeless animated classic, "Beauty & the Beast," in 1991, it instantly became one of the most beloved movies of all time.
Are you ready to enjoy some ghostly, ghastly tales of horror and woe? The Historic Holmes Theatre production "Full Moon Macabre" will offer all that and more -- with a dollop of humor thrown in for good measure. Set to take place this coming Friday and Saturday, Oct.
Though the martial art form known as tae kwon do has its origins in the Far East, some of its principles have much in common with Christianity. "The five tenets of Tae Kwon Do are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit," says Pat Fineday, the martial arts instructor who recently helped to found a new tae kwon do club in Detroit Lakes. This club, known as Lakes Tae Kwon Do, is unique amongst other area martial arts clubs and schools, in that it is Christian-based. Its co-founder is Pastor Dave Bakke of Go-After Ministries.
There was a time, Lyle Dahlgren says, when he envisioned retirement as sitting back in his armchair, smoking his favorite pipe and dispensing sage advice to those who would come to listen. But it hasn't exactly worked out that way, as his wife Janet will tell you. "We're semi-retired," she says.
